installing tech sights on a 10/22

hey all, i just got a pair of techs in the mail for my ruger, and i'm pretty excited to try them out this weekend, but removing the factory front sight is becoming a major PITA

i dont have a brass puch at the moment, and the few attempts i made using a hammer and flat hex head screwdriver (left to right) didnt make it budge

its making me fee very wierd, hammering away like this, im worried ill bend the barrell or something. i dont have a vise. i was told to just make sure its secure (basically on my lap), support the muzzle, and tap the sight out.

well tap tap tapperoo, but the sucker isnt cooperating.

any advice? or, at least, assuage my worries about damaging my new toy?

the muzzle has to be very well supported. I messed with mine for a while trying to brace it every which way. finally I got on the floor and stuck a weight right under the muzzle. if the gun jumps at all while you're drifting out the sight that's just wasted effort. and you'll probably have to hit it harder than you think. BTW punches aren't expensive, might want to consider getting a set.

Glad ya got it... We had to brace the underside of the barrel with a shot bag, lay two bags over the barrel, and then use a very solid brass punch and a large hammer to get two front sights off our Rugers when building Liberty Rifles... Was quite a job, so you are not alone!!!!

When I put Tech Sights on my 10/22, I used a piece of 2x4 pine wood about 12-14 inches long, with a groove cut out with a router. Lay the barrel in the groove, had my son hold the rifle flat, tap the sight with a brass punch, worked great.

glad to hear it's done. mine ruger 10/22 has tech sights and a volquartzen custom target hammer which made an amazing difference in the trigger for a mere $40. aside from trigger and sights the rifle is totally stock and now I can shoot ~1" at 50 yards with federal bulk off a rest. love it!
