I tried to I stall the stock on my shotgun bt didn't work. I read that you need a 5/16 5.5 inch bolt which I got but still didn't work. any advice?

Someone may have told you the wrong thread size, or length. You can buy that bolt dirt cheap from any gun parts supplier, or Mossberg themselves, no license needed.

The stocks bore hole should be the right depth. Drop the bolt in the stock, and you should see most of the threads sticking out the front hole.

When I installed the Hogue on my Mossberg 500, I used the OEM bolt.
It went into the receiver too far, and impinged on the safety, making it inoperable. Of course, I didn't find out until I had the buttpad all screwed on.
I had to use some washers to keep the bolt from doing that.

Generally, the bolt will have one flat washer under it. If it still hits, put a nut on the threads, then use a cut off wheel on a Dermel to cut some off the end. Turn the nut off the thread to clean up the threads, and re-install the bolt.

I know how to shorten a bolt. I didn't want to, in case I wanted to reinstall the OEM wood stock at some point.
