Installation of Makarov Sights

I love my Mak. I just did well with it during Department qualifications. The front sight is very hard to pick up fast. Yes, I know the pistol is a military pistol. Yes, I know sight installation will be more expensive than the price of the pistol. I carry my Mak daily & it's a keeper. I want/need a white dot or tritium dot front blade & a dove tail cut into the slide. Can you guys recommend anyone to do the job? I would have Phoenix Armory (Joe Bunsck) do it but, they're not in business anymore.

Thanks

I can't offer any smith recomendations, but I can tell you how I solved the problem fairly easily and quickly.

I first cleaned and prepared the sights with mineral spirits. I then laid down a primer coat of white primer on the sights. Finally, I painted a flourescent green "U" on the back sights and a flourescent orange dot on the front sights. The orange is very bright and allows you to immediately aquire the front sight and obtain proper sight allignment and picture. The contrasting colors really help. It's cheap, but then, the Mak is cheap, so it all works. Try it. All you'll be out is about $3.00 for model paint.

Check over at www.makarov.com. A company by the name of Beast Enterprises used to offer aftermarket sights on Mak slides. They usually sold the finished slide, so I'm not sure if they will install on your slide.

While you're at makarov.com, check out the inexpensive little glow-in-the-dark stick-on thingies. They're cheap and they're great. You have to trip the one for the front sight with a sharp knife but that's easy enough.

I have not done this, but I have thought a lot about it. Would it be practical to use epoxy or even weld to reconfigure the front sight? It wouldn't have to be a lot higher, but wider would help a lot. The colors and dots are great ideas.

I have an russian commercial mak with the adjustable sights. I had a new front sight dovetailed into the slide. It was too tall so I filed it down and opened up the rear sight some. I then drilled front and rear sights so I could put on some dots with paint. Now I have three dot sights that I can see. Mark

Are the rear sights driftable for windage? Any advice before I go whacking the rear sight sideways.

Of course, I'm taking about a Bulgarian, not the rear-adj Russian guns.
