Insights Training Center or Firearms Academy of Seattle?

I'm a newer shooter (been shooting for about a year now), and I would like to take a good, general handgun course. Both Insights and F.A.S. have courses this weekend that I might be able to make it to . . . any reason to pick one over the other?

From what I can tell, they're both good programs. I could flip a coin, but I thought I'd see if anyone here has a strong opinion either way.

These are the course descriptions for each of the two facilities:

Insights: http://www.insightstraining.com/view_course.asp?courseID=146

Firearms Academy of Seattle: http://www.firearmsacademy.com/DefHdgn.htm

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I don't know much of anything about either one of them. I can say, Insight has some instructors who "appear" more impressive than others. It is important who is teaching the material. They don't list backgrounds on the FAS website. I seem to remember that most of their instructors are cops. Since you are traveling, I would consider Paul Howe, Jeff Gonzales, Tac Pro, Gabe Suarez, etc.

Since I'm looking into a shooting school I happen to google Mas Ayoob and I see he instructs at the Firearms Academy of Seattle. I could never convince the wife that I have to go so far but the list of instructors is impressive. I also see that Mr. Hays is a LEO and an attorney and runs a legal help group for folks who carry called the legal Defense Network.

For me both schools would be terrific.

I'm looking at gunsite or to get into Ayoob's class when he has it in AZ.

I don't have much input on Insights but do have a bit on the Firearms Academy of Seattle. I live 6000 miles outside the continental US and make it back to the States every year or two. I usually make it a point to swing by the FAS for some courses. I have been through all their intermediate and advanced pistol courses and even repeated some to refresh my skills. The facility is great, the instructors also excellent. I would recommend them without hesitation for someone who is looking for reasonably priced, practical firearms training. Good luck.

I know both fairly well and either would serve you just fine. Can't go wrong with either - so the choice would be based on convenience, IMHO.

You are to be commended for taking training seriously and chosing either institution.

I took Hangun Basic Safety at FAS. Being my first class I was impressed by the amount of info on legal use of deadly force, concealed carry, and open carry. They were very knowledgeable and friendly. I have been shooting for a while but they had a couple of hints while out on the range that helped me out. Range instruction was very personal. We had one range instructor for every 3 people. One person from each group was allowed to shot at a time so the instructor was really able to pay attention to your safety and shooting habits. Big thumbs up to FAS

Many of you will disagree with what I am about to say. But, I don't go to shooting schools for legal advice. I have talked to people who attended LFI courses who were so worked up about the legal aftermath, that I just don't know that they would defend themselves if the need arose. Keep in mind that instructors are not lawyers, (regardless if they testify in court or not). Nor are the laws the same every state. Something an instructor tells you is legal in TX may get you thrown under the jail in CA. Basic legal advice on the use of deadly force can be obtained from your state govt', anything beyond that you need to know a lawyer.

Well the instructor, Marty, has passed the bar in WA. So yeah....
But it is a good point to find out what the laws in your own state are. I happen to live in the same state as FAS so the laws covered applied.

I will again be attending an Advanced Tactical Shotgun class at FAS...The range is nice, private, and instructors do pay attention to each student, and are fun to be around.

The instruction is very good as well. For me it is only a 2 hour drive. The classes I have attended so far, have all had good class comradeship, which also make for a good atmosphere to learn in.
