Innovations on a Glock 20

I like to tinker and invent.
I have the Glock 10mm as my woods carry pistol. I live in the woods and have big cats, pigs and a few bears around where I live, hike and ride.

I owned a glock 29, but thought that the gun was too fat and the barrel too short and did feel like a brick.
I got rid of it and got a glock 20. But it was too big for carry.
So last year I decided to do the grip chop on the 20 making it easier to wear and conceal. So here it is with the chop to Glock 29
(A common procedure these days, but checking my past posts, my first chop of a block was in 2005 when I chopped my block 19 to 26 grip length, long before the fad caught on)

slimming the grip

When you do a Chop, the hump on the backstop is removed, and the grip feels a little slimmer, but with the shortened grip, it still felt too fat, and the finger grooves are something I've never liked.

I have a first generation clock 17 with the smooth fine textured grip, and wanted something more like that, but didn't want the ugly solder iron stippling look.

So I ground off the finger grooves, thumb rest and took the rear backstop down to smooth and a little more rounded.

INNOVATION #1
I haven't found anyone that has ever done this yet, but instead of using a soldering iron to do the stippling, I used a Dremel with a tiny round burr bit. This allowed for a smoother stippling texture more like on the original glock 17 that I liked. The finish that you see is the plastic smoothed down to 220 grit and then finely stippled with a Dremel.

Innovation 2

The Glock 20 original grip frame seemed to large for my medium hands.
The Glock 29 seemed too short for a full hold, having to hold with two fingers and one curled under.

I know that the Pearce baseplate G29 would solve the problem, but wanted something that would come out looking more like a perfect glock 19 grip size.
A large caliber midsize Glock which does not exist.

So yesterday I took off the baseplate on a block 29 mag, and screwed and bonded on a piece of hardwood to it and reshaped it to fit the Glock to the exact grip length and shape that I wanted. It is pretty close to midways between the 29 and 20 and close to the size of a Glock 19.
WOW, THIS FEELS GOOOD IN THE HANDS!

Innovation #3

And finally, an innovation that I've been reluctant to show because I had a patent pending on it. It's been around on long guns, but have never seen it on a pistol.

This is a post sight that I developed for the Glock.
Simply put the front dot on the post and you have a perfect sight picture. The advantages of this are quicker sight pickup and you can see what is around the target better than with notch type sights. Accuracy is just as good, so it has all the benefits and the only drawback on this tiny sight is the inability to rack with the sight on a belt like you can with bigger fixed combat sights.
A link to my old webpage for it:

Awesome work! Looks great.

FYI, my wife has a 1st Gen G19 on which BTC did a 360-degree grip reduction with stippling about 12-yrs ago, and it looks a bit like your "trimmed-down" G20.

There's more than a few pics of these Glocks with 360-degree stipple jobs out on the net. ;)

Again, nice job!

Thanks atman.

Here is my 2nd gen glock 19 I did back in 2005
I think maybe you meant 2nd gen glock 19 as well, because the 1st generation glocks 19'shad the super fine stippling like the 1st gen glock 17's and are very very rare.

Customizing a Glock?! Who'd a thunk it!!!

I've had a lot of fun teasing Glock folk but these mods look really professional and functional. Dang it would be fun to try out the grip you created. Of all the Glocks out there the 10mm Glock 20 would be one that holds my interest.

Not sure I would like all of your alterations, but kudos to you for making your gun what you want it to be. Great workmanship.

The chopped grip on a full sized "G" would not work for me but I do like the way you undercut the trigger housing on that 20!

Thanks, instead of actually cutting into the guard and making it thinner (and weaker) I simply rounded the sides on either side and that made it way more comfortable and able to get a little higher on the hold without the edges of the trigger guard biting my finger.

Rounded the front of the guard for easier entry into the holster.

creative

That's pretty darn creative, and some slick work.

I wonder, could one put a G29 slide on a G20 frame (matching generations) and create a G20 "Commander" so to speak.

Or......visa versa and create a G20 "officers model"?

In any event, your project seems well done.....I don't care much for the finger grooves on the 3 and 4 gens either, and prefer the Gen 2 versions lacking same and add a small strip of friction tape on the outer (right) grip surface.

No, the 29 and 20 uppers are not interchangeable.

The mods I made are much like a colt officers with the shorter grip.

Lonewolf makes a long slide for 179.00 stripped slide and you can buy a 6 inch barrel to fit.

So right now, I have three grip lengths to choose from
The 29 length with the flat base plate, the 19 midsize with the modified bumper, and the block 20 grip length with the 20 magazine and A&G sleeve.

The Glock also has a .40 conversion barrel. So with a simple 15 sec barrel change, the gun can shoot .40 and 10mm.

3 grips lengths and twovcalibers on one gun is pretty versatile.

I like the G-29 grip conversion.
The sights are a good idea for combat sights. I always liked the Sig sights with the dot over post (Von Stavenhagen style sights IIRC). In low light the black rear disappears all you have is the white front dot sitting on the white rear post, basically the same sight picture as yours. I always seemed to shoot better with that style compared to the 3 dot sights.

Good stuff.

I'm interested in getting a 21 slide/barrel and appropriate mags for either my gen 3 or my gen 4 G20. I have plenty of 45 auto ammo.
