I am new to the site as of today. It looks really intersting and full of info. I served in the Army and National Guard for over 42 years. I am still an avid hunter and fisherman.

I have a S&W Model 10 .38 cal with 5 inch barrel. the SN is V 495887 and from what I can find on the web it was manufactured from 1942-44.
A number of the Model 10's were not only made for US soldiers but to other countries as well during WWII.

Can you pinpoint the date any better than what I have found.

It's an M&P, made before they gave them model numbers. The V In the serial number designates it as a Victory model M&P.

Many people tend to call all M&Ps "Model 10s" but as noted that didn't start until 1957. Yours is Victory Model (again, noted above) which is a wartime version of the Military & Police Model.

The two most common configurations are a 4" barrel in 38 Special for U.S. issue and a 5" barrel in 38 S&W for Great Britain. If yours has a 5" barrel the odds are it is not in 38 Special. The 38 S&W requires loading your own ammo for economy if you plan to shoot the gun much.

I have one made in early 1945 and issued to a German police department in Saxony during the post-war reconstruction. I like it because it was issued to a Saxon pig.
