We have a sporterized rifle we need help with. The rifle is Spanish, (Fabrica De Armas Oviedo) Rifle was a 7x57 and has been rebarreled to .308. My thoughts are is this a good conversion, safety being 1st. Is this what was called a 93, 95 or 96 mauser. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Not a safe conversion if you don't know to keep the pressures low. The Spaniards had a low pressure 7.62 CETME round which operated at the same pressures as the old 7x57.

The 7.62 CETME round is dimensionally identical to 7.62x51 NATO and 308 WIN which are spec'd to 50k CUP and 60k PSI respectively (this gave rise to the rumor that 308 Win is spec'd to a higher pressure, it really isn't it is just spec'd on a different scale).

Fine for low pressure cast bullet hand loads.

Thanks for searching it out for me Jim. I guess I was playing with fire shooting these 175 grain FMJBTs through it Saturday. The rifle seemed to handle them very well though I must say.

Are you a handloader?

Lyman's starting loads for .308 are in the 40,000 CUP range, actually slightly below 7mm Mauser maximum. Velocity is equal to or higher than 7mm because of the lower sectional density and higher expansion ratio.

Careful powder selection will get you a 150 grain bullet to 2700 fps at design pressure, 2500 fps or more with about anything in the book.

There is no reason to be afraid of these rifles if you know how to manage them.

FireMedic716, please post a close up pic of the action. I can't tell what type of Mauser your sporter was built off of.

When you open the bolt, is their a third lug just forward of the bolt handle on the rear of the bolt?
