Planing on buying a pistol, which I havn't done in many years (1953?). I am sure times have changed, so what information trail (state and federal data)will I be leaving as footprints in the future. Appreciate the heads-up warnings in advance.

It all depends on what state you live in. For example, in my state, Utah, I can buy a handgun from a private party and the only paperwork is the cash changing hands. In other states, the same transaction would result in a background check and state registration of the handgun.

So, what state are you a resident of?

You need to check with the local law enforcement to correctly get the info you need. Federal footprint from a FFl dealer, State ,Local they differ from state to state, counties even have different rules inside a state. In N.C. the law says that if you sell a handgun you are to require a permit for that handgun, so even person to person sales are leaving footprints if you obey the law. Go to the local p.d. and ask them to protect yourself.

It looks like there will be a "footprint" no matter what I do. Ask the Police? Dosen't that in itself lead to a "paper record" and thus to data that is never erased from goverment records. I am not a criminal (OOPS! had a parking ticket in 1958), served twenty one years in the armed forces. And as you point out it would seem that I'm a candiate for BATF inquiry. Just a old man bitching! Thanks guys! You did help, and that is some of the info that I wanted.

The asking a question doesn't lead to a paper trail. The paper trail doesn't start until you either get a purchase permit or actually buy and fill out the paper work. Person to person sales depending on state laws often leave off the paper trail. The down side is if the used firearm was used illegally and you happen to own it when it is discovered.
