Hey all,

I visited some older friends of mine that live on a farm in the middle of nowhere and part of my plan for the trip was to sit down and clean the various guns they have. Some of these have been in their family for while. Some caught my eyes as intresting.

I was wondering if any of you had some information on the following 2 rifles. Anything about their history and modern value would be intresting.

1) Winchester pattent 1899 thumb trigger .22 single shot. I have found some information about it but not much.

2) Stevens M416. It is a bolt action, magazine fed .22 with a complex target sights. The most I could find out was the 2000 of them were built as military trainers in the late '30's.

Any knowledge would be appreciated.

The only additional info I have is that the Winchester 99 thumb trigger rifle was made from 1904-1923 with around 75,433 made. They are a bit scarce in the US because, according to what I have read, they were popular in Australia and most went there. They were the same as the 1902 model except for the thumb trigger. Current value for a functional rifle ranges from around $200 for 10% finish to $900+ for perfect or new in box.

(For the Model 1902, the top price is a bit over $200, but then they made 620,000 of them.)

I can't add any info, but I'm curious - what is a "thumb trigger?" Do you actually fire the rifle with your thumb? Sounds very unusual to me. Also, I wonder why these would be popular in Australia.

Ok .. the thumb trigger. Imagine a single shot bolt action rifle, for which the bolt does not get cocked when the action is worked. Once a round is chambered, you can manualy pull the bolt back and it engages a little hammer/trigger which keeps the bolt back. When the hammer/trigger is pressed with your thumb the bolt is released and the weapon fires. I dont know if I explained it well enough because it is kinda hard to picture.
