Info on S&W Model 34

I stopped by a local gunshop and saw two .22 S&W Model 34 kit guns. One was just marked as a Model 34 and had a square butt. The dealer thought it may have been made in the late 70s.

The second was marked as a Model 34-1 and had a round butt. The dealer said it was a "flat latch" model and was made from 1947-52. There was more bluing gone due from holster wear but the color was more blue than the newer model.

Price for the newer model was about $400 and the price for the older model about $325. Barrels looked good on both.

Any insight on these? Any opinion on prices?

AFAIK, $250.00 is a normal price for them. I have one that I bought last year for sub$200.00. They are nice revolvers if noone has messed with them. Do you think the offer of $500.00 for both is possible? You start a collection and have two nice examples and you have a M34 and a -1. I have seen pristine examples at gun shows for $375.00. They are not often found in that condition. They spent most of their lives in tackle boxes and on camping or hiking trips.

I second Sir William on this one. I got my Model 28 .357 for $250. I think that $400 is a little on the high side for a used Smith unless it's a rare model or something. Yeesh, you can buy a new Ruger for that if you shop around enough.

A 34-1 will be newer than a 34 and any S&W that is model marked will be newer than 1957
+ or - $75 from $350 would be a going price today.

Not a chance, as Brian notes.

SCS&W lists the 34-1 as appearing in 1960. In 1966 there was a thumb piece change. M suffix began in 1969. The pinned barrel was deleted in 1982 .
The 34 no dash would have been made between 1957 and 1960, the time of the 34-1.

SCS&W Prices:
NIB $375
Exc $300
VG $225
Good $175
Fair $135
Poor $85

Prices in SCS&W are 5 years old and may vary from region to region. (SCS&W 2nd Edition published in 2001.)

The real question is what do YOU think of the prices?

Thanks for all your help.

I had thought the dealer may have been wrong about the 34-1 being older. I've noticed that S&W revolvers seem a bit higher here than in other parts of the country, but there shouldn't be that much difference.
