I have had many tell me that with a C&R, I can easily get mil surp rifles....as they are boasted as the best-most reliable in comparison to commercial ones today.
That's all good and dandy, and sounds tempting, BUT; doesn't getting a C&R mean that the Feds know and record each firearm purchase you make?
I'm just wierd about things like that.

You must keep a bound book for all C&R guns you purchase (Even if you fill out the 4473 on a 50 year old Mauser, it still has to go in the bound book, when you could just leave a copy of your C&R with the guy and cash and carry the gun). This does not include "modern" guns, only guns over 50 years old, or guns listed on the C&R list.
Basically, do you plan on purchasing old guns such that the transfer fees would exceed $10 a year? The C&R liscense is only $10 a year, issued for three years at a time. You even get a Brownells discount (25% on most items).

Unless you've always purchased privately, they already know 'who you are'.

You will be amazed at how much money you'll theoretically save.

I say theoretically because all those savings will turn into more weapons !:D

I am just wierd about any govt agency knowing everything I'm doing.
Don't want to really go that route... private vs. not-so-private.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.................

Question: Could I become a cruffler for the purpose of enlarging my collection and a relative/friend's collection? IE, could I use a type 3 FFL to purchase C&R rifles for myself and for transfer to another on a regular basis for no profit? That wouldn't seem to constitute "engaging in business". Basically, I'd split the fee with a friend, and we use it to enlarge both of our collections at no profit to the person who actually held the FFL.

Poodleshooter:

I asked the ATF the same question, and they said that it would be best if both people got C&Rs. The reason for this is that they have three things they look for when defining "Engaging in the business" (Yes, its arbitrary): Intent, Repetition and Profit. Of course, the second and third are pretty easy to figure out (only one gun every 4 or 5 months and zero profit and you should be safe), but they didnt explain what they meant by "intent" in their response to my question.

.

Also purchasing for someone other than yourself could be considered a 'straw' purchase, another no-no.

I'm thinking of getting a C&R just for the discount at Brownells (and others)...

That stuff is getting a might expensive...
