Info on Colt .22 'short 'rifle

Top of barrel: Colt's PTFA Mfg. Co. Hartford, Conn. USA
Patented May 29 Sept. 1883 May 26 '85 June 15 '86, Feb. 22 1887.
95% condition

Any help, advice, or info on the date of manufacture and history is greatly appreciated.

Foxfire, it sounds like you're describing the Colt Lightning Slide Action, Small Frame rifle. The Small Frame Lightning was made from 1887-1904 with a serial number range of 1-89912. It was chambered in .22 Short & Long with a 24" barrel(round or octagonal) with a blued finish, half-length magazine and a casehardened hammer. The straight stock and forearm were walnut with an oil finish and could be plain or checkered. The Lightning Small Frame was very well made and today in the condition you've described it could be worth about $1,250. Hope this helps!
