Woe to the poor IMI/Tanfoglio pistols. They've undergone more name changes than Al Gore has personas. They started out as Jerichos, than were sold as Baby Eagles, later as UZI Baby Eagles and now again as Baby Eagles.
There are lots of different variations and sizes. Three main categories: compact, full size, full size with compact slide. Two maing types of safety set ups: frame mounted that can be carried cocked and locked but hammer must be dropped manually; and slide mounted safety that acts as hammer drop but cannot be carried cocked and locked.
I intensely dislike the UZI Eagle line. Not because they're mechanically distinct from the others or because they're of lesser quality, but because of the horrendous large lettering on the slide. Why on earth would I want to advertise what I'm shooting to everyone at the range? I find that tactless.
IMI/Tanfoglio pistols have proven themselves int he field. They're used by some units of the IDF and police forces. Other countries, mainly in the Third World, have adopted them too, because of their low cost.
I don't consider them ideal for CCW because of their weight. These are heavy pistols. Even the compact is quite heavy. I'd suggest something lighter, but if he's set on one I don't see how he can go wrong.
I've seen them recently at bargain prices. One dealer had the full size model, night sights and two preban mags for $379. That too me is a real bargain.
