I might take a winchester timber carbine in trade. it is chambered in 444 marlin. has anyone here fired one? I understand that this rifle is ported and I curious about the noise and blowback. Is this a major down-fall or is it nothing to be concerned with?

I had a .444 Marlin, but it wasn't ported. I'll just say that it "speaks with authority" even without porting. I don't suppose that matters in the field, but could be a problem in other situations. If you like the guide type rifle, and are a reloader, the .444 would be the way to go.

thanks guys,
I already know the 444 is nota "girl's" gun. The recoil is hefty but I'm used to recoil as I shoot 375 H&H and 416 Rigby...etc.....
what I want to know is how is it to shoot with the ported bbl. A friend mentioned that it may be nasty with the blow back, as far as noise .

If the porting works, should not be much louder to the shooter while reducing muzzle climb and recoil. Could be really nasty for folks not directly behind it tho.
