Are these still in production? What can be done with one of these, that can't be done equally as well with a 110 gr. projectile from a 6.5" .357 Mag? The velocities are very similar, with the .357 coming within 100 fps to the velocity of the .30 Carbine, when fired from the Blackhawk. Is the .30 Carbine Blackhawk more of a novelty that a useful tool? Your thoughts and experiences are appreciated.

You really need to shoot one to understand their value.

They are a rip roaring fire shooting, no recoiling, make sure you've got good ear protection on monster.

Their value is mainly in the fun aspect.;)

Shoot them in low light with hot loads and the blast from the BC gap is enough to blind you for a second.

Yep, they are still in the Ruger catalog and sixgunners still buy them. Nope, there is nothing you can do with a .30 Carbine sixgun that you cannot do with a .357 Mag; but people buy them because they want one! Good article on handloading for this round/handgun in the current issue of Handloader Magazine. NG Bruce

They can be fired from a .30 Carbine M1 Rifle, for one. If you owned one of them, it would be a nice combo to have. :)

I bought a brand new .30 carbine this past spring. They are a blast (literally) to shoot. VERY high fun factor .....

probably more than half of the guns I own are not 'practical'. That does not reduce the fun factor, or the interest. If you have to ask whether or not to buy one, and especially if you are basing your decision on practicality, then don't bother. You are not the right kind of guy to own more than a .357.

I wanted one since I was a kid. But, I could never think of a good reason to own one. As you say, there is nothing it can do that can't be done better in something else.
However, I bought one anyway. It can't do anything that I can't do with a .357, but it is fun never the less.
Check out this months Handloader Magazine.

Loud. Very loud. Had an old three screw. Course it wasn't old when I had it as they were all three screws back then. BTW- it has a 7.5" barrel not a 6.5".

Sold it after I bought a chronograph and discovered that 110 grain loads were leaving the muzzle at 1,400 FPS. The same day I was testing some hot 110 grain .38 Special loads from a 4" M10 and they were clocking 1,405 FPS. Couldn't see the extra weight and blast to throw the same weight bullet five FPS slower than a .38 Special.
