Hi everyone,

Been lurking for a while and just decided to post. I'm moving to Philadelphia and would like some info.

1)What forms of ID are required for handgun purchases?
2)How do I apply for CCW in Philadelphia?
3)Where's a good range to shoot?
4)Where's a good gunshop in the area?
5)Where are any good gunshows held?

Thanks for the help.

There is a lot of info under the topic:

Montgomery County, PA

which was posted in January or so.

I can tell you it's much friendlier here than Chicago, both for shooters, and in general.

Welcome plnk,

As these questions are more of a general nature, I'll move it to the General Discussion forum. Look for it there...

1. Pennsylvania driver license should do just fine.

2. You need to go to the firearms unit at 990 Spring Garden Street.

The problem is that Philly, while bound by the state-wide premptions provisions contained in Act 17 of 1995, tries to make it as difficult as possible for you to get your CCL. They will require:

a. You must pick up your application in person (not required by law);
b. You must submit your application in person (not required by law);
c. You must submit to fingerprinting (not required by law); and
d. You must pick up your CCL in person (not required by law).

The CCL office is only open from 0830-1430 on weekdays. They know this, and so they make you take time off from your job to make the three (!) trips to the office just to get your CCL.

Send me an e-mail at jthuang@rcn.com with your mailing address and I'll mail you a copy of the application. I made photocopies last time I was down there. :) That way, you can at least save one trip.

3. Depends on where you are in (or around) Philadephia. You in the city proper or in the burbs?

4. Same as #3. As an aside, within Center City, do NOT go to Colosimo's, which is right across the street from the CCL building. If you must buy a gun in Philadelphia, I'd recommend going to The Firing Line (catchy, eh?) on Front & Tasker streets. If you can travel, there are other alternatives -- just let us know how far you're willing to go and I'm sure we can help you out.

5. This is up in the air, now that the Valley Forge shows are canceled. Appalachian Promotions, the successor to BCGA, is trying to start up the analog to the VF shows in Aston at the Tri State Sports Center (next one is 10/14-15) but I've never been to these shows.

If you want to go to a good show, wait until MAAC (Mid Atlantic Arms Collectors) has its show in the Harrisburg Farm Complex. Yes, it's 2 hours from Philly but it's 1,200 tables of guns! This show is only held twice per year and the next one is in December sometime.

Another good one is the MAAC show at the Fort Washington Expo Center. The next one is 9/30.
