I want to know about this gun I've bought. I think it's a pre 1954 Colt Detective Special. I want to use it as a concel carry. Will the loads of today be too hot for this gun? Ser# 98007x.

It's my understanding that those manufactured prior to '72, their 3rd variation, ARE NOT rated for +P. So stick with standard pressure ammo. Not that the revolver is going to explode, but it will loosen up.

When in doubt, shoot the ammo it was designed to shoot. I have a box of 1951 production 38 Special Police Service 158 gr lead bullet cartridges I would be happy to sell to you.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the info! I thought that I needed to stay with the low pressure ammo.

There is a lot of wisdom in "The Firing Line".

I don't care what they say, you guys are first class!!
