Disclaimer: I'm not so smart that I figured this out. Someone on Rimfire Central wrote about it, I tried it, and will never be without it again.
You can make an inexpensive "Bore Snake" for .22 rifles by getting a piece of weed eater cord about a foot longer than the length of your barrel.
With a lighter or other flame source, melt one end of the cord into a ball slightly smaller than the bore. Cut the other end so there is a sharp angle on it.
Take three small patches and punch small holes in the center with a picture frame nail. Slip them on the sharp end and slide them down to the ball. Coat them with bore cleaner.
When you need a quick cleaning, open the breach, insert the snake, and drag it through. Continue cleaning by sequentially turning the patches over and sliding them through again. With three patches you should get 6 pulls.
I made a second one and coated it with oil and slide it through after the bore cleaner.
I store the snakes in separate freezer ziplock bags. I've made two snakes each for all three of my .22lr's and my .223REM. I leave them in the cases so I always have them.
Great trick and cheap to make.
Happy shooting..... Shoes
