Indy FireFight Video

The massive SWAT attack in a neighborhood street in Indianapolis last week is now online.
http://www.beast-enterprises.com/swat2.rm

It is not streaming.

It is a little jumpy and does not show the truck coming to a complete stop, having cops light him up, and then having him drive another 50 feet and hit a car.

The driver was "injured" as was a cop (friendly-fire ricochet).

Not to criticize fellow LEOs, but that recording was very jumpy. Difficult to see all of the details, but it looked like organized chaos. Anyone ever see the Gauntlet?
I have heard it all to many times: he tried to run me over. That leads to a chase, a shooting, or something equally as dangerous. The question should be: did the officer put himself in that situation, or is that how it unfolded? I work(ed) with one or two who pulled that stunt, they are now out of the business.

Thanks, fed168 ... that was exactly the point of my curiosity. I've seen similar video, and it appears that 'he tried to run me over' gets used quite a bit. If this guy didn't pull a gun and threaten officers, then it seems more than a little reckless to fire on the vehicle while it is driving out of a residential neighborhood. This sounds like it may be more 'drug-justified' action.

Without getting into the subject on the war on drugs, many LEOs fail to realize a very simple maxim: if you do not get him today, there is tomorrow, he will turn up. These people always turn up or get ratted, they do not simply just disappear. Now I am not advocating letting the guy escape, but capture him smartly. The PPPPPPP: prior proper planning prevents p**s poor performance.

I agree with you that if the guy did not try to run the officers over they should not have opened up. But I disagree with your statement "if he didn't pull a gun and threaten officers...." If he did actually try to run one of them over they were perfectly justified in shooting, as long as one of the officers did not jump in front of the vehicle while he was trying to evade them. I think if someone tried to run you over you would probably shoot also and you would be justified. The problem with the BGs is in their hast to escape, sometimes they don't even realize someone is in the path of their vehicle. I can't comment on the video because I have not seen this video because I do not watch the news (I can't take the propaganda) and I could not get the link above to work.

fed,
You are absolutely correct in saying some LEOs don't remember the old saying "get them another day", I have seen this too many times in my years in the trenches. I don't think some of these LEOs realize that they are risking people's lives with the attempts to catch a BG, including their on and their fellow LEOs.

mrat, your point is well taken.

To be frank, if someone is trying to run me down with their car, I'm going to have to have a fair amount of distance for my shots to even have effect. That is, if I'm 10 feet in front of the guy, it seems unlikely that my best course is to hold my position and fire at the driver. Seems like a more instinctive, and probably logical response is to try to get out of the path of that vehicle. OTOH, if the vehicle is 100 feet away and veering for me, then I can see the logic of trying to take out the driver.

Curious about other LEO perspectives, since I'm only going on second hand knowledge, comments from LEO's and video clips.

Thanks. Regards from AZ

It reminds me of that Southpark episode where to legally be able to hunt past their kill limit they started yelling "It's coming right at me!"

SWAT teams are getting out of hand. It's not good when we have soldiers patrolling the streets, and increasingly that's what we're seeing. I don't want drugs on the street, but if legalizing them will get rid of the storm troopers than it will be worthwhile. I'm sick of seeing cops get more and more militant while we gun owners get marginalized and declared radicals for the same thing.

Remember, what the jumpy video lost from the original broadcast was that the vehicle came to a stop for three second whereupon most of the shooting began. The SWATies were to the side and about ten feet away.
