I recently joined a 25-yard indoor range in my home base area. I actually have another one that is only about two miles from my house but I refuse to go there anymore because, well, it's a dump. Now don't get me wrong, when I was a kid growing up in Louisiana I used to LOVE shooting , well technically plinking"in a couple of landfill areas near my house. Cans and bottles and targets by the multitude. It was quite a different time back then.
So I joined this range for $108 annual fee. Open five days a week, decent (but not great) ventilation system, but you have to pay an additional $11 every time you shoot there. That can add up to over $700 if I just shoot once a week! Anyway, I went there yesterday, paid my fee, filled out yet another questionnaire on range rules, etc. and proceeded the perilous climb down to the basement. That's right...a basement in Louisiana!
The target trolley is a standard triangle shaped metal (I would assume made out of ballistic steel) and it was obviously hit more than once. You attach the target to it with a pig paper clip. The one on my lane was weak and not very good. The lane next to me had no clip at all. When you hook the target to it (with the generously provided piece of shot up cardboard) your target is right there below the angled steel. I was shooting two 9mms with handloads, a GP100 with .38 Spl handloads, and a .22LR semi-auto pistol. I was shooting at about 10 meters and doing pretty well...for me, at least. I didn't get my first handgun unil I was well past 60 and my old peepers ain' what they used to be.
Anyway, I shot a total of 85 rounds and my target fell to the ground in the lane. I figured they might accuse me of shooting the trolley (which I did not) and I couldn't crawl downrange to retrieve my target, so I ended my session right then and there. There has got to be some better system of attaching a paper target to a trolley system Any ideas out there?
