In vehicle gun storage...

I am wondering if most people use only a hard case for their guns when transporting in a vehicle or are there people out there that use loose gun storage like the popular seat back sling I see all over the internet? Does the sling really hold the guns in place? Can you fit a soft cased gun in there in most applications? If a hard case is usually used, where does it fit best for stablity? Also on ATV's and UTVs.
