Hey guys watched Heat again tonight. This is my fave movie. Now during the bank robbery shootout, what kind of rifle was Al Pacino using? It looks like nothing I have ever seen. Also what was Cheritto using? The guy Pacino kills, the one using a child for cover. It looks like a Galil,or Valmet. Iam not sure though.
Thanks 45automan

I'm pretty sure it was a Beretta semi auto.
The last badguy he shot had the Galil.
I have it on DVD and will check it...

I saw the movie a long time ago, and it looked like a para FAL (smooth handguard). It did'nt have the ventilated stamped steel/plastic handguard of the FNC. Could sombody check it out and correct me if I'm wrong?

For those of us unfamiliar with military hardware...

If Vincent's rifle in that scene _was_ a Belgian FNC, what sort of ammo would it be firing?

I was very impressed by the looks and the sound of that rifle, and I've kept my eye out for one in the gun shops around here.

Would there be any chance that a Los Angeles cop would have access to such a weapon?

Vincent's rifle was an FNC, they are 5.56x45, same as the M16 series.

There is no way in hell an L.A. cop would have an FNC, or the Colt Commander (or was it an Officer's model, I don't recall) that was his duty gun for that matter.

5.56x45mm/.223. Probably 55 grain Full metal jackets (easy to get and cheap) or 62 grain SS109s. One of Vincent's partners was killed by Chris in the first minute or so of the shootout, and he had a (body armor) vest on, but the threat level of said vest is unknown, so even a 55 grain could have pierced it if it was a lower classification.

An FNC will be hard to find. What few were imported (there never was high demand for them until 1988 with the import ban looming) are probably held onto for investment purposes, and they have high prices. Good luck in your search.

Like Rex Feral said, no way that Robbery/Homicide detectives would have something as unique as a Colt Commander/General Officer handgun, or a FN FNC. SWAT would have the more unique weapons like single action pistols (I thought that the LAPD SWAT had M1911 style pistols in .45) or short barrelled rifles. I had heard that after the LA shootout the DoD sent the LAPD (under a program offered nationally to police departments for the cost of shipping) several hundred M16A1s (like 800+). If I remember correctly, they will be in the trunks of patrol or shift supervisors, and not every patrol car. I imagine that their SWAT team received some too. However, this news isn't so groundbreaking, since many of the M16A1s are going to be replacing older ones that the LAPD purchased long ago. I had also spotted a Ruger AC556K (short barrelled Mini 14 in selective fire model) in the hands of an LAPD SWAT member, but I don't know How long ago the pic was taken and if they still issue it.

I was half watching a program on LAPD SWAT not long ago and one of their guys had a HK G36 (can't remember if it was a 'K' version or not).

Yep, I thought it might be a SIG 55x at first glance, but the second look made it clear: FNC.

Yeah it's a FNC!!!

They're going for anywhere from $2300 to $2700 a pop. Never fired one, but the only issue I've ever heard of them having is the one mentioned above, the firing pins tend to crack.

I recently saw a photo of a shotgun new ad for an FNC from late 1985. It was going for $580.00. Can you believe that?

Thats the one....

The gun dealers have to be benefiting from all this legislation. Of the smart guys who bought stuff up before the ban. That'd be one hell of a return on your investiment huh?

You can buy THE FNC Pacino used in the film at a local gun shop/range, incl. documentation, for a mere $6,500; I looked at it last night. They also had some other Hollywood guns at one time, incl. one used in the original King Kong movie.
