In the Market for some .22 rifles

Hello all, I work for a security company and I have been tasked with researching a large purchase of commercially available rifles chambered in .22lr. I know a bit about guns in general but very little about this cartridge other than the occasional Ruger Mark II from the army days. So lately I, and my colleagues have been shooting a LOT of rifles of various makes and models. What I would like to do is ask you shooters/gun owners what .22 rifle has worked best for you.

Here is some quick criteria:

-Rugged enough to withstand the elements and neglect of new shooters.
-Must be available in synthetic/stainless. They will be used in jungle areas.
-Be within the >$300 USD range.
-Something other than the Ruger 10/22 (Already have 150 of them).
-Looking for a semi-auto alternative (to the 10/22).
-Looking for a bolt-action model.
-Preferably "American Made" (Bidding points).

These will be used by predominantly non-gun types (yes, they will all take basic gun safety/marksman training). So dependability with a minimum of cleaning is important as they will probably go months without a visit to the armorer. They will be used for clearing off small game from trap areas, so no, a larger caliber is NOT needed.

The models I am most interested in hearing about are the Marlin 60-CF and the Savage Mark II FSS. The Marlin 795 had feeding issues with our test guns, as did the Savage Model 64, however opinions on these rifles are welcome as well.

Thank you all in advance for your replies/help. I wouldn't normally do my research this way but a buddy of mine mentioned that you guys (and gals!) at TFL were very professional and knowledgeable. I like to give my clients the very best and figured I could cover my bases better by asking those of you who have fired thousands of rounds through these rifles as opposed to the few hundred I use for testing. If you can think of any better rifles than the ones I listed in this post, feel free to mention them and I will check them out.

Can't say enough good things about the CZ452 (although I think the current model is the 455). Bolt action, very accurate, sturdy.

If you ever consider a semiautomatic, I would highly recommend the SIG 522. Takes most cheap ammo, reliable feeding, also very accurate.

Thanks!

Ironically, I just received a delivery of three 522's SIG sent over for testing. Will have to check them out when the armorer is done with them.

The CZ Model 452 was my first choice for a bolt-action rifle, however it's nickel finish didn't pass one our endurance test

I'd take a look at the Savage line of rifles. They should meet all your bolt requirements. I'm lost on a stainless American made automatic though. The Marlin 22 autos would fit all the other requirements though.

By FAR, the best value in what you are looking for would be the Savage Mk II stainless. Very accurate, very tough, and very affordable (I seem to recall them being around $250).

What about the Mossberg 702 Plinkster? Everything I've heard about these rifles is that they are 100% reliable with whatever ammo you throw through them. Couple that with decent sights, and a low price tag...

The S&W MP15-22 would fill your needs on a semi auto (US made)

Reliability is an odd issue. A lot do great out of the box, some have issues. I am guessing about 20-30%.

If they go back to Smith they come back working like champs

All the other semi auto guns of that type seem to do far worse. Just a tough one to make work.

Was out with my brother today shooing his 10-22. He had two magazines that did not work right, Ruger. Nice thing it was not the tun.

what .22 rifle has worked best for you.

Only problem with the M&P15-22 is it's above the $300 limit. Otherwise I would agree.

Sorry your first choice of the 10/22 was the best. But the issue is ALL 22LR semi-autos have to be cleaned on a regular basis there is no avoiding that.

Light, accruate, stainless and reliable. And less than $300.00

The finish on the bolt of the savage will not endure what you want to do with it. The rest of the rifle is ok but the bolt may as well be bare steel given how quickly it corrodes. I picked that exact rifle for my nephew thinking exactly what you're thinking....affordable, durable, accurate. It's two of those three.
Too bad you are collared with a $300 limit. Lots of wonderful 22's out there but they won't be had for under or at your limit.

Mossberg 702 plinkster is a great gun at a low price. I have several thousand rounds through mine and have had no issues. I picked mine up a few years ago for around $100 at Dicks.

Does Marlin still make the Papoose 70P Stainless? Not a bolt gun but a weatherproof semiauto .22 that is accurate and suitable for non-enthusiasts.
