In-Car Pistol Mount Solution

Please, this is NOT a thread to debate gun carry in a car.

Been working on this challenge for a while, and I do believe the gun magnet is the best solution I've found so far.

Picked up a Taurus PT111 Millennium Pro 9mm and was surprised by how well it shot right out of the box. Super compact little 13 shot with a decent trigger.

This "Quick Draw" magnet is super powerful, and there's no way a compact pistol will fly loose even in an accident.

So, the muzzle is pointed safely, straight down with the weight of the gun resting both on the floor and the magnet.

I left enough room to move the seat up if the wife drives the Touring, and with my hand towel stuffed between the seats instead of under the front seat, it's a winnah.

Gander Mountain

$25

Sheet metal screws into the lower side of the console.

It leaves enough room to grasp the grip and twist, not pull up with a finger on the trigger.

Besides, the addition of a manual safety is one reason I choose the PT111.

Happy New Year

Dondavis3,

putting the phrase "Quick Draw Gun Magnet" into a Web Search Engine very quickly produced this address.

quickdrawgunmagnets.com

The photograph in the original post shows that he mounted it with two screws (you have my sympathies, I went a long time unable to view photographs and video), probably simply screwed into the sheet metal of the drive tunnel.

I did not research the price, but the web site should get you on your way.

Advertised between $20 and $30 at various places.

Is that legal?

With the towel over it, it would be considered a concealed weapon, but as long as you have the proper permits that would be OK. Without the towel and permit it would depend on the state as far as what is considered open carry etc. etc.

I can't believe I've never seen this product before now!

I would like to see somekind of weighted holster/mount (about the size of Sonic Route 44 cup) the could be placed in the center console cup holder.

Over a year ago, Texas passed a law legalizing the possession of a handgun in a vehicle without having a CHL. I live in Tejas.

Anyone who can legally own a handgun can carry one in their car.

Hmmmm...I like that!

I have a Crossbreed Ohai setup in my car, but I like how the magnet pushes the pistol away so you can get your hand down in there.

The Ohai is smack tight against the mounting surface, so I have the handle stick out a bit.

For $25 the magnet is cheap enough to try.

You know, mounting two of them, one above the other, just might be the ultimate retention trick.

I'll try the single magnet for a while and see if the pistol moves or pivots.

Drove around doing errands (Walmart had 9mm WWB!), grocery shopping, and exchanging a few things at Academy, and my leg never made the slightest contact with the gun.

If it doesn't work, I'll just remove a couple of screws from the carpet and console with no permanent marks.

i have a bladetech owb holster ziptied to my seat belt below the buckle, between the seats. its real simple to reach down as if for your wallet, or to realease your belt and come up with the gun.

its also covered with a cloth that matches the seat fabric.

And how small of a fender-bender will it take to have a loaded gun careening around inside your passenger compartment? I've had more car accidents than gun fights, myself. A secure (and secured) holster makes much more sense by any measure, IMO, except that the gun magnet is more discrete when not holding a gun (parked on a city street, for example).

Advertising it as a child-safe solution for gun storage is Just Plain Stupid, IMO.

Stainless Steel Guns

This device should work with your stainless steel gun. My SP101 is magnetically attracted and the cylinder of my LCR is magnetically attracted. Both are apparently made of 400 series SS.

I believe that all SS guns are probably of 400 series SS because 300 series SS cannot be hardened and is also difficult to machine.

I doubt if any gun is made of Duplex SS, this grade is too expensive. I’ve never had occasion to check it for magnetism but seriously doubt if it is because of the extremely high nickel content.

I might try one of these devices with the SP101 but with only the cylinder of the LCR being magnetically attractive I don’t believe there’s enough retention to trust it.

You seem to know a lot about this specific magnet and it's retention qualities.

What's your experience been with them?;)

I have experience with car accidents. If you can pull your gun off the thing with your hand, then it's not secure against a vehicular impact. The video on the site was particularly instructive.
