so to decrease crime more we need to buy more handguns. :D

People have been commiting crimes since the time they were using rocks for weapons.

Well according to that graph as gun supply went up between 67-74 homocide also went up. I guess you have the drop in 91-97 to account for but that could be attributed to "technology" or some lamo excuse they give. Interesting link.

Is there a graph that shows infor thats not 10 years old?

reasons he says all guns should be banned.

I do not believe that the second article you linked to says anything at all about banning guns; the topic is that more guns fall into the hands of criminals through straw man sales than through theft.

In the first article, it is painfully obvious that the research cited by Mr. Duggan is fundamentally flawed, in that Mr. Duggan, in order to initially *prove up* that gun magazine sales are a proxy for gun ownership, uses in part: "Mr Duggan also used government health statistics to demonstrate that states with higher magazine sales suffered higher rates of gun-related death."

This is circular logic - a failure to isolate a variable. Because it's absurd to say that finding places with a correlation between rates of gun-related death, and gun magazine sales proves higher absolute gun ownership rates. It would have been obvious to a 4th grader that what this proves, far more likely, is that such counties have higher gun ownership rates *among criminals & assorted yahoos* who are enthralled/enticed by over-the counter magazine sales, not the gun-owning public in general. So his entire premise of using gun magazine sales as a proxy for gun ownership, in order to see if there's a correlation to crime & suicide is flawed, in that he *chose* counties with high rates of crime & suicide to begin with! Flippin' Duh! I'm sure Lott will rip him a new one, if he hasn't already.

He's using that article and the straw man argument to show why all guns should be banned. If we ban handguns in every state then there wouldn't be thefts and there wouldn't be strawman purchases.

Interesting analysis on the economist link. Thankyou very much.

The author bases his entire argument on the premise that the sales level of one gun magazine title is directly proportional to gun ownership. He opines that when sales of this particular magazine go up, so does gun ownership. This argument is specious and the link is tenuous at best. Just because he addresses the issue doesn't mean that is works in his favor as an argument. It is a basic debating tool to highlight your weakest point to take the argument away from your opponent. The argument stands; there is no provable correlation between the sales level of a single magazine title and gun ownership.

Here are a few of his conclusions stated accurately with my changes in italics :
...a 10% increase in an average state’s rate of gun magazine sales, was associated with a 2% rise in its homicide rate.
...increases in gun magazine sales led to increases in crime in the following year, but the reverse did not hold.
...burglary and larceny rose significantly following growth in gun magazine sales, by roughly half as much as homicides.
...those counties where gun magazine sales was highest did not see any significant changes in crime when their states passed concealed-weapons laws.

It is obvious that we need to find out what magazine he was using for his research and ban it immediately. Magazine sales cause crime!  :barf:

People that write crap like this really need to read Richard Poe's book, "The Seven Myth's of Gun Control". This book is an awesome read, it really dismantles the gun control argument peice by peice, its superbly researched, and he reports underlying causes of gun crime that the media never does. Things such as an elementary school shooter coming from a crack house environment with loaded guns laying around, that's one example. I'd highly recommend this book to everyone, its a great book.
