A while back I picked up a couple pounds of IMR 4451 and a couple pounds of IMR4166 just for kicks and grins to see how well they shoot. Being a Metallic Silhouette competitor in Arizona, and a sometimes-hunter in South Dakota, I am interested in their temperature insensitivity and their reduction in copper fouling. Though those features are important, how they work accuracy wise is equally important, to me.
As I said, I am just getting started with my testing and I have already found a IMR 4451, 130 grain load for my .270 Winchester silhouette rifle that groups 1-3/4" at the 300 meters Javalina. Very promising indeed. Promising enough that I bought an 8# jug at the LGS.
From what I have read, 4451 is supposed to be good with 165/180/200 grain bullets in the .30-06, too. We'll see. I have lots of 165-168 grain bullets laying around.
I have only run one set of test loads on my favorite .308 and have a very promising load that is grouping 0.833" at 100 meters. I think we can tighten this up a bit with bullet seating depth adjustments, but will have to wait for a later date as I broke my left index finger last night just below the first knuckle. I am right handed, but holding the forearm of a moderate to heavy recoiling rifle is out of the question for awhile.
Anybody else been experimenting with these new powders?
