IMR 4451???

Just came into several pounds of IMR 4451 and after doing a little looking on Hodgdons burn rate chart it is right between imr 4350 and H4350. I would think after doing some other reading I can use IMR 4350 data when loading with it? Of course I will start low and work up. Anyone have any experience with this stuff?

STOP! Use proper data!

Go to the Hodgdon/IMR/Win website and get your data from there.

This is the second post like this that I've seen. Completely unsafe.

Well I load for a 7x57 in a Ruger M77 and a Winchester model 70 and the Hodgdon loads are anemic for the 7x57 on that site. For example in the Ruger I am shooting 51.5 grains of H4350 behind a 140 grain bullet and there max charge is only 46.5 and in the Winchester behind a 154 grain Bullet I am using 48 grains of H4350 and they list 42.5 max for 160 grain bullet and 44 grains max with a 150. So hodgdons load data is not for a "modern" action in 7x57and they are way to low for me so there 4451 data is as well. I compared other common calibers, bullet weights, powder charges comparing 4350 to 4451 and find they are very similar that's why I ask. And no I am not doing anything unsafe I have did my research and I know how to look for pressure signs and I am not showing any at all. But these are safe IN MY RIFLES I will say. My 4350 supply has diminished and with 6lbs of 4451 on hand I am going to possibly make a switch and see what happens.

All I was trying to say is, use manufacture data, they should know best. From your original post, you'll be using another powders data, for the powder you're actually using.

It is unsafe, especially with all the new reloaders there are out there now.

I agree completely I guess what I meant was comparing apples to apples the minimum and maximum charges between the 2 are "similar". I would never load my max charge of H4340 with the IMR powder without proper load work up. The numbers just looked similar is all and with the 7mm Mauser in modern actions I have to go into uncharted territory at times to get the full potential out of the cartridge.

IMR4451

ROCK 333.....HODGDON MANUAL # 25 has a :7X57 load section strictly for [RUGER rifles ONLY: PG. 193]and lists load data with HODGDON,IMR, and WIN. powders; Have you checked it out?

PM me and I'll give you the load data straight from the book.

WILL. :D

"...not for a "modern" action in 7x57..." The 7mm Mauser isn't exactly a modern cartridge either. Dates from the very earliest days of smokeless powders.
In any case, "similar" does not mean the same thing.

Rockchucker333, Hornady and Nosler manuals data for 7x57 is for strong action and Berger data for 7x57 they used 26" barrel.

One thing you didn't list was velocity.

Hodgdon manual 26 (1992) had max load of 52gr/H-4350 with 140gr bullet @ 2807fps compared to Hodgdon 2015 max load using 140gr 46.5gr/H-4350 @ 2682fps. Both barrels 24"

I'm been shooting IMR-4451 in 30-06 and 270 and hunting loads been using H-4350 and accuracy pretty close.
