IMR 4166

Good Afternoon,
I bought some of the new IMR 4166 Enduron Powder a little while ago. Is anyone else having trouble with this powder going through an automatic powder measure device? I attempted through a Dillion and a Lee stand alone measure device. The powder just clumps up and won't feed. any one have a suggestion? Thanks.

With my $11 microscope I took some pics for you.

With my calipers I made some measurements for you.
I reached back in the internet to 1994 rec.guns on usenet for the size and shape of rifle powder.

The IMR-4166 is a wonderful powder It should go through the powder meter better than the longer 4350 or 4831 as they are 0.085" long and the 4166 is only 0.072" long.

Unlike the 4451, 4166 has a hole, which I think was called a "perf." in the chart of old powders, for perforation.

Ask me, and I will blather on about all the animals I killed with it:)

I've run a lot of IMR4064 through a Lee Perfect Powder Measure, and I think it is key to be a little energetic with the movement so that the powder measure gets a little shake at both the top and bottom of the stroke, as well as ensuring there isn't any static electricity binding anything up.

It also helps to be measuring more than 40 grains, the larger amount ensure that once the powder starts flowing it has plenty of space to flow into.

Every once in a while you'll here the "crunch" of a few kernels getting caught in the movement, but that's nothing to worry about.

As far as automated powder dispensers go, they work with all powder types, just some powder types are faster than other powder types.

IFM,

First I would call Dillon and ask if anyone else has had this problem. There customer service is great, and they will tell you how to address an issue they've seen before.

If Dillon hasn't seen this, then you may have a unique issue. Your description of the powder as "clumping" is a bit concerning. When powder breaks down it starts to get sticky and can even glue itself into lumps. You want to be sure this is not happening. These should not be clumps that hold together when you remove them from the measure. If they are, something is wrong with the powder and you should contact Hodgdon, which distributes it, and describe the problem. IMR had a recall of their 4007 SC powder for premature breakdown a couple of years back, so this is an unlikely but not impossible situation.

If by "clumping" you just meant that it is bridging and not flowing through the powder feed, but not that it is actually sticking together, then Dillon may be able to help you. I like the JDS QuickMeasure, which has a Dillon drop adapter, for stick powders, specifically, but I'm surprised you are having the issue at all.
