Imr 4064 vs accurate 4064 (AA)

I have not been able to find Imr 4064 since the buying frenzy started. I can however find AA 4064. It is next in line behind Imr 4064 on the burn rate chart meaning it is either the same rate or just a tad slower. Have any of you used it and if so how is it? I use Imr 4064 for 22-250 mainly but also 7.5x55 and 8mm mauser along with Imr 4350. Have found a source that actually has several pounds on the shelf but the fact that there is so much left makes me wonder about it's usefulness.

I bought 8 lbs. on sale once and could not tell the difference between IMR. Natually work up your loads as between lots but I bet you will end up with nearly the same load as with your IMR.

I bought several kegs of AA4064.

It is a shorter cut powder than IMR 4064 and thus meters better.

I developed some loads in 223 and 308 Win. In my Kreiger Barreled match rifle I got the velocities I wanted but not in the Wilson barrel AR15. I could not get more than 24.0 grains in a 223 case without extraordinary measures. Kreiger barrels are tight and loads developed in a Wilson or Douglas will blow primers in a Kreiger. With the new brass colored WSR, I had to cut loads to 22.5 or 23.0 because I pierced primers during rapid fire. This was disappointing as 23.5 grs AA4064 with a 69 SMK did not pierce primers with the older nickel plated WSR.

My lot of AA4064 shoots exceptionally tight groups in the 223 and I won my class and got medals shooting it at 200 and 300 yards at Camp Perry in the Kreiger barreled rifle.

But, in the 308 Win, I get over pressure indications at velocities less than what I can get with IMR 4064. The 190 grain loads are just too slow for 1000 yard work.

I have shot a 175 SMK 41.5 grains AA4064 LC cases CCI #34 at 600 yards and only dropped a couple of points, even though the velocity is less than what I want, the load was accurate.

It is a good powder within its limitations.

Slamfire, what do you think about AA4064 in 5.56 LC brass with a Hornady 75gr?

I loaded a few up from 22.5-24.5gr set to 2.25 OAL. The 24.5gr really got crushed and because the BTHP has a lot of room in the hollow point cavity it deformed from the press. Basically it made the loads pinch the tip making it now 2.26 OAL. I didn't want to press them down further because that'd set them to low because it was the tip giving a longer reading. I just sand papered the tips back down to 2.25.

I did notice the LC brass was fine but I couldn't load any 223 brass as the powder came way up into the neck. Any advice?

I've used both, worked up loads for 243 Win and 30/06. I found no more difference than in different lot numbers of the same powder. I don't shoot the groups most of these guys do but i do OK.

For my Garand - I loaded 46.5 gr of AA4064 with a 147 gr FMJBT in military cases and got an average of 2543.8 FPS with 28.4 stdev. It worked fine.
