Improved Cyl 870

I'm soon to own an older Rem 870 Wingmaster, with 26" Imp Cyl barrel. I've learned that different barrels for these aren't easily available, so I'll probably leave it as is .... or maybe cut a barrel off to 18" for HD, if I ever find a used one.

I'm wondering, if I'd use the original barrel a little for slugs / deer hunting, etc, how much accuracy is lost, not having the riflings to spin the slug, compared to an actual slug barrel? Thx,

rifled slugs through a smooth barrel are great for under 100 yards. You should be able to easily shoot 2-3" groups. Foster style slugs are designed to be nose heavy so when they start to lose stability in flight, they bring themselves back into smooth flight.

A rifled barrel will be accurate to 100+ yards, but is far more expensive to shoot due to the higher cost of sabot slugs.

If it's a 12 ga gun, there are plenty of barrels available. If its a 20 ga gun built on the 12 ga frame (serial number ending in either X or N), then you are correct and barrels are a bit scarce.

All I can say about rifled slugs is try a couple different brands and see what the gun likes. Each gun is a law unto itself. Offhand with a bead site, I was able to group 3 - 5 inches at 60 yards Brenneke KO's out of my 26" IC wingmaster.
