Important questions about my new Savage 10FP...

Well my new 10FP just arived today. I just took her out of her box. I however have some questions that I am wondering about.

1. I took a look down the bore of my brand new rifle and the bore is filthy. I would assume that this is just from the machining process. I fully plan on cleaning the rifle befor I ever fire it but not until I get a quality cleaning rod and bore guide. Is the bore supposed to come like this?

2. I haven't chambered a round yet and don't plan to. However I have worked the action and when the bolt is locked down it can be wiggled quite easily. For example I can push on the side of the bolt and it will move. This seams odd since all my other bolt actions lock firmly. I however have very few bolt actions and this may be normal. It may change when I chamber a round as well. Is this normal for 10fps?

Just worried about my new baby. I want to make sure she is all put together correctly before I break her in. Thanks, Larz

1. How dirty is dirty? It may just be dust collected in there. Also, they probably test-fired the beastie and that may be the residue.

2. The Savage bolt is two-piece, so it will have a little play. It's disconcerting until you get used to that. Don't worry, it's locking up just fine. It will still shoot like a sonofagun.

Its not filthy.. but dirtier than the bores of the rifles I own. It may be from a test shot. It appears that way. I don't think its dust. I just expected to be blinded by a bright new perfect bore and it looks like a dirty fouled one. I am sure it will improve drastically when I clean it.

That makes me feel better about the bolt. As long as it shoot I am happy. It just doesnt lock down like my rock solid Mauser98 action.

I believe it's intended as proof that the gun functions, as they most likely use non-corrosive ammo. mine came this way from Savage, and shoots probably tighter than I can imagine. And I can get 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. And I am not very good, even benched. No worries, mate.

Larz, I have read a letter from Savage on the "wobbly bolt." Basically, the locking part of the Savage bolt is at the front, and the way they design it, the rest of the bolt and the rear lugs are merely for safety, and are not expected to be "tight." This reinforces what Bruegger said about the two piece bolt, which was absolutely true. The front lugs lock up extremely tightly...the rest is just along for the ride. The dirt was probably from test shots. Just shoot the darn thing ;)

You DO clean every gun you buy before you shoot it for the first time, right?

Right?

Get back to us after your baby has its first bath.

I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised when you take her to the range.

I think it is from the factory test fire. I did not look down the bore before I cleaned mine. But the first patchs where very dirty. I shoot 50 rounds of ammo though mine the first time I went to the range. Once I got the barlle broken in (cleaned first, polished bore , cleaned shot 3 rounds cleaned shot 3 cleaned sighted in and shoot groups of 5) I ended up with several sub 1/2 MOA groups from factory match ammo (Honaday 168 gr match) The 165gr Light magnums also shot sub MOA in my gun.
I have put about 100 round thogh my gun this week (shoulder is killing me because I get a very loose one hand hold on the gun when I am shooting for fine accuracy) I am reloading for my 10FP and fully expect to do better than 1/2 MOA with the reloads (If not the match ammo will still shoot sub MOA) Good luck with your new gun.

I forgot to mention that the bore on my 110 was dirty when I bought it. Mine fired sub-MOA right out of the box with cheapie hunting ammo.

I know what you mean about the different feel between the Mauser and the Savage. I've got a Mauser, too and the action is smooth and tight. But the Savage shoots better.
