import M1A?

I've got a chance to pick up a used imported M1A for $400. I believe it's Chinese, does anybody have any info on these weapons? I'll have more info tomorrow. I'm curious as to reliability, durability, etc. TIA for any information.

The Chinese made excellent M-14 receivers. Forged steel, dimensionally correct. The Chinese bolt is soft and if its ben used much probably won't headspace correctly. You need to have a USGI bolt installed and I would recommend either Fulton Armory http://www.fulton-armory.com/ or Smith Enterprises http://www.smithenterprise.com/ to do that job. Once done, you have a forged receiver (vice cast as with Springfield M1A's) with a USGI bolt that will go the distance. Both shops will pick up on any other problems the rifle may have and inform you.

Thanks for the responses. I got to shoot it today, put around 15 rounds through it. Very nice, very accurate. I just fired it offhand, no benchrest. The rifle is by Polytech, it is Chinese made. Counting the rounds I fired, only about 200 rounds have gone through it. The price as quoted is "$400 or 500" Either way I'm going for it. It will be a nice complement to my .308 Garand. I've wanted an M1A for some time, just couldn't spring for the 1200 to 1500 that SA wants. Thanks again guys for the quick responses. Sorry, there Galt, but I'm going to buy it. I'll email you if anymore show up.

just found one of these....

not quite as good a deal as yours, but pretty good. One question -- how tight is that bolt supposed to lock up? I don't know what's normal for 'em. Seems there's a little play on the long axis, which would strike me as odd (if not scary) in some rifles.. is it normal for the Polys, or a bad sign?

Thanks!

You will notice a little "play" along the long axis of the bolt, but only before you release the hammer. The bolt needs a little play to be able to drop into the locking lugs. Once the hammer falls, the play disappears, or should.
