Irate Dems Seek To Force Gun Votes
By KENNETH R. BAZINET
Daily News Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON - Congressional Democrats enraged by the NRA's attack on President Clinton will try to force a vote today to get House and Senate members from both parties to hammer out gun legislation that has languished for months.
The National Rifle Association slammed the effort as "political grandstanding" and began circulating a leaflet on Capitol Hill calling for supporters to shoot down any gun measure.
"The NRA is demanding that their troops in Congress kill a vote to even start the discussion again on child-safety locks and closing the gun-show background check loophole," said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Nassau). "I'm sick of it."
The Clinton administration was rounding up allies to gather this morning at the White House to rally behind the push for tougher gun laws.
Meanwhile, bitterness between the White House allies and NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre — who said Clinton tolerates gun violence to bolster his political agenda — continued.
McCarthy had been invited to debate LaPierre on the "Today" show yesterday, but he refused to take on the gun-control advocate, whose husband was killed and son wounded in the 1993 Long Island Rail Road shooting.
"The NRA is trying to control the debate in Congress the same day I can't get them to debate me on national television," McCarthy said.

If there was ever a time to contact your representatives and join the NRA, THE TIME IS NOW! Tell them that you want no more gun control of ANY kind!
