I'm Guilty

I have been an avid gun enthusiast for years. Nearly everyone of my guns gets shot for a few thousand rounds and then makes a trip to my gunsmith for work and customization.

My son, a deputy sheriff has followed in his Dad's footsteps and has become an avid shooter and gun collector. I am in the process of having my gunsmith build my son a custom 1911 for his birthday.

Of all the years I have been shooting and collecting, this is the first time I have had a custom job done for someone else. I know he will like what is being accomplished and I got to wondering how many people have custom guns whether modified factory models or complete custom from the frame up. Further, how many of you have given those guns as a gift. My motivation is seeing my son enjoy his gun while I am alive instead of leaving it to him in my will and never knowing his enjoyment.

To this point I have either bought them already customized or did some customizing myself. But most of it have been easy things like barrel and recoil springs and a trigger job in a SD9VE. A few refinishing's but allowed the coatings to be done by someone else with better knowledge/equipment. Also a few grip replacements or mods. Even made a pair or two.

I do plan to do a 45 super or 460 Rowland conversion on a 1911 platform the first of the year. Just have not decided which one yet. Since I reload pistol calibers, it may sway my decision as to which I decide on. Then again I could do them both!:D I know the 45 Super is cheaper if I have a decent 1911 from the get go however a compensated 460 Rowland would be nice...I smell a new thread coming...;)

45Gunner - This is an interesting question.

Many times I’ve thought that if I had an unlimited source of funds I would gift some people with custom firearms that I think would suit them to a tee. (I’d have a Les Baer of my own first of course.)

But then I think isn’t it the height of arrogance to think that I could pick out a gun for someone else? In your case, since it is your son, this doesn't hardly apply. I'm sure you know what he likes.

I do know that if someone gave me a firearm I would keep it and appreciate it, and the sentiment that went with it, even if I didn’t particularly like it. Example: suppose I was a dyed in the wool modern semi-auto guy and I got a single action revolver, I would keep it. Likewise if I gave someone a firearm, especially a custom gun and they sold or traded it I would be irritated. I realize that after I give it to them it is there property to do with as they please but I would still be irritated.

I have always wanted to buy a set of 4 guns with sequential serials numbers and send them away for matching engraving, one for me and one for each of my brothers-- I know they would appreciate it and they would be passed down over the ages. Or get the guns engraved with each of their battalion insignia's- 1 82nd Air born and 2 10th Armored.
