I'm a newbie, so.....

What is the difference between pre-ban and post-ban?

Exactly how many different versions of AR's and AK's are there?

What is a good book, or site where I can learn about rifle basics, different styles, ammunition choices, and pro's and cons of each, etc?

I was in the Army from 90 - 93, and I grew to love my M16, but have never owned or shot a rifle since then. Have owned and fired plenty of different handguns however.

Anyone close to the Northern Va. area can recommend a quality gun shop, and range that carries and allows an extensive variety of rifles? Full Auto's as well? Been only to Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly, and Galyans in Fairfax, but not enough variety for me.

Thanks for now, and I love this site!!!

P.S. More stupid, newbie questions to follow. This place should have a primer for new people, cause there is a ton of acronyms getting tossed around here. Feel's like the Army again.

Welcome to TFL!

As I understand it, Pre-ban is any rifle made before the '94 Assault Weapon Ban which mandated that any semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine must not have 2 or more of the following features: pistol grip, flash suppressor/grenade launcher, bayonet lug.

Use the search function and you'll find our archives which discuss pre and post ban guns.

I know most of the common acronyms by now, but Herk's post got me to look more closely at the Primer.

Has anyone ever actually used TTW, also known as "Taunting the Wookie"? I can imagine what it means, but you sure never see it.

So don't be TTW.... or else.

Herk, for local dealers, check out Virginia Arms in Manassas. I bought my FAL there, and the guys are great to deal with. They also stock a variety of ARs.

Another dealer is Potomac Arms at Zero Prince St. (by the water) in Alexandria. They sell military surplus gear as well.

I doubt you'll find a really "extensive" selection locally, though. Remember this is liberal territory.

The only local rifle range I've been to is the NRA indoor range in Fairfax. There's also Clark Brothers in Warrenton, but I don't know much about it.

Thanks guys, I'll read up as soon as I can so I don't continue to be perplexed and confused.

David, thanks for the tips! Funny thing is, I live in Manassas, and my friend who is a cop keeps telling me about the place and I still have never been there. I'll check out Potomac Arms as well.

I appreciate all the help!

I lived in Herndon '86 thru '89. I always went to Clark Bros. right on Rte. 17 south of Warrenton. Nice range then and well run. Had to (were supposed to buy your ammo there). Range Master would check for your recpt. Prices weren't all that bad though. Also used to shoot pistol/revolver out in the GW Natl Forest south of Winchester.
