Looks like the earlier conjecture turned out to be true. John Cullerton is going to try for a ban that will cover all pump and semi-auto shotguns and all semi-auto rifles and pistols.

Illinois is the only state in the Union that does not allow some sort of concealed carry statute for its law-abiding citizens. Illinois is also home to the city with the highest murder rate in the country. And yet, the Land of Lincoln is set to ring in the New Year with a new gun banning law that is more extreme than any yet instituted.

...
The Illinois State Rifle Association reports that Cullerton's bill will ban pump action shotguns, semiautomatic pistols and rifles, and even antiques rifles like the M-1 Garand, the rifle used by U.S. troops in World War II. The M-1 Garand has only an 8-round, clip-fed ammunition system, yet Cullerton wants to label it as an "assault weapon."

According to the source, the bill would not include any grandfathering and would require Illinois gun owners to turn in their guns to the Illinois State Police, where the weapons will be destroyed.

If idiotic laws like this worked, why don't they just make it illegal to be poor? It would fix our economy overnight, right?

Is he freaking insane? What kind of Draconian law is he trying to pass. Sounds like anything that has a trigger he wants to designate as an "Assault Weapon."

I think that Culbertson's agenda is clear. I think he's an idiot having said that a part of me can understand his panic considering the murder rate in Chicago.

Nevertheless, if he had his way he would make criminals of millions of law abiding citizens who may own a Garand that "Granddad" brought home from "The War."

Or that German made Mauser that was his war trophy. I'm willing to listen to the other side but this is ridiculous. This can not be allowed to pass or it will set a very bad precedent. I do think that when push comes to shove the State Supreme Court would rule any such law unconstitutional.

I'm not a Chicago resident so there isn't much I can do as it related to writing representatives. Like I said, I'm fairly sure that the High State Court would rule such a law unconstitutional but honestly I don't like rolling the dice on what a court may decide to do with my rights.
