Illinois deer

Nice deer, but...

...I live in west central Illinois and I really object to people bringing attention to us and the critters we share space with. So we do have some fine animals but lets not tell everyone, OK??
(sshhhh...the season ain't over yet)

Good Shooting, I assume that since this is a shooting forum you got it with a shotgun and not a bow. How much is the mounting fee in your part of the state?
 
In this state our firearm for deer is shotgun or muzzleloader. I got this guy with my Mossberg 835 Utilimag with a rifled barrel. It has a Burris 1.5 X 6 scope that stays at the low setting. I used a Winchester 3" sabot slug. I shot him at about 65 yards as he was sneaking through a ravine just before the end of shooting time.
One shot through the lungs that completely penetrated the animal. He ran about 50 yards and piled up.

No offence toward bow hunting but I went on a Caribou hunt a few years ago where about half the hunters were bow hunters (I used my BAR in .30-06 with Failsafe handloads for my two animals). There were a lot of wounded / lost animals among the bow hunters and some were bragging about how far they were shooting at the animals. When I harvest an animal I want to dispatch him as quickly and humainly as possible.

That experience just turned me off to bow hunting, although I know there are many that enjoy it and know their limitations.

I've taken 3 deer this year with bow and arrow. total of 3 shots, none missed, wounded, or lost. longest blood trail was 60 yards. I have seen deer when I'm out bowhunting after the firearm season crippling around with a front leg shot off or otherwise wounded by sloppy gun hunters.
good hunters are good hunters whatever the choice of tool and slob hunters are just slobs in the same way.
 
Kingcreek. Of course you are right. I've certainly witnessed my share of unethical gun hunters. The bad apples, whatever their weapon of choice, make it tough for the rest of us. It's just that I've chosen to be a gun hunter and be the best most ethical that I can. As I stated, my limited experience with these bow hunters just left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm sure for every bad one, there are many more that commit the time necessary to be good hunters that know their limitations. No disrespect intended, I hope none was taken.
