Illegal to Post Pictures of Firearms?

If it is illegal, then I have broken the law :p

The only thing I wouldn't do if I was you is post a picture of a gun where the serial number is clearly visible. Mosaic it or extract it with a paint program first.

I'm wondering why a person would have the impression or suspicion that it would be illegal to post a photo of a legal item.

I mean, I don't even think it's illegal to post a photo of an illegal item. (Obviously, you couldn't post child pornography, but then, that wouldn't be a photo of an illegal item, that would be the actual illegal item.) But let's say you came upon a photo of a liquor still out in the woods. That would be an illegal item, but why would you think showing a photograph of it on the internet forum would be a crime?

Besides, we've seen probably thousands of photos of firearms on forums like this one and others. I bet if it were a crime we'd have known it by now.

azurefly...I posted a picture of one of my guns on another site and asked people to share pics of their guns. A "Ex LEO" told everyone to be careful what they post because of homeland security and NFA violations. I think he is just paranoid.

Hahaha talk about paranoia...

Paranoia is when your family is so anti-gun they think that if you carry or own a firearm LEGALLY that equates to instant trouble with the law.:D

Obviously the "Ex-LEO" has never visited the firearms auction sites let alone perused the magazine racks at the store.

Just for the record he has since clarified that he meant illegal firearms. Nothing was wrong with my post...he was just warning others. He probably scared everyone away though.

I don't think there is such a thing as a firearm that can be determined to be "illegal" just from a picture. If I have a full auto or SBR/SBS, it's "illegal" because I don't have the paperwork to go with them. However, there are many members here that own such things perfectly legally because they have paid the tax and have the paper.
You can't tell this from a picture.

Illegal firearm , no

But a firearm in an illegal circumstance, yes

There have been arrests made stemming from pictures of students holding guns in their dorm rooms.
Felon with guns and I believe minors in unsupervised possession of handguns can cause problems also

Well that's the only way I could come up with that could possibly have any legal ramifications, and suppose that that is what the ex- LEO was talking about.
Either that or he's an idiot :)

The other thing to consider is burden of proof. This being a digital medium, things aren't always what they seem. The picture might not be real.

Somebody would still have to verify the photograph and I can't see how that is possible in all cases.

just out of curiosity, why do people worry about posting serial numbers? is someone going to scrub their's, laser etch your's, and then commit a crime with the gun?

why do people worry about posting serial numbers?

I would assume that it is either fear that "big brother" is watching and this would be another form of registration, or that someone, somewhere could claim that serial # xxxxx was stolen from them (could be true, could be false :D ) and they want it back.

I, personally, do not care to specifically identify my firearms on a public forum.

I can imagine some "inventive" person using a copied picture to sell an weapon that doesnt exist to fraudulantly aquire money, misrepresent the condition then cut and run or fraudulantly copying the photo and pasting it on another site to represent an image for an antigun message.

there are people out there that have nothing to do but cut and paste.

but no, its not illegal.its just not a good idea.

I imagine that if it were a problem, the manufacturer's websites would provide plenty of fodder.

If we were to worry about antis misrepresenting a photo, how much more should we be worrying about them misrepresenting posts off sites such as this one. If it's not a good idea to post photos of guns, then it's certainly not a good idea to discuss them in a public forum.
