Mexican illegals coming across the border = high profile "tip of the iceberg".
If only the problem was that simple - and if it were confined to those that break the law to enter. IMNSHO, the vast majority of illegals came in via legal channels, then just got "lost" in the vastness of the USA.
Tens (if not hundred's) of thousands come in vial legal channels, or what appear to be legal reasons on the surface - then stay and get "lost in the system".
- Students that overstay their visa.
- Fabricated jobs that allow an employer to tailor a job for a specific person then bring that person in because they can demonstrate to INS that they could not fill the position with a US citizen.
- Women brought in under the guise of some legitimate reason, then diverted into the sex industry.
- Marriages of convenience.
- Relatives that come in for a "visit"...then never leave.
- Relatives that come in for a "visit" ..then end up working in the family business,,starting their own business,,,and repeating the cycle.
- Legitimate workers brought in that overstay the terms of entry and just get lost in the system &/or relatives of those workers.
The S. West and California are the presnt focus of "illegal aliens". The problem is more far reaching than simply someone crossing the border to pick lettuce.
Focusing on building walls and fences in the Southwest will stem a (regional) trickle. {@ an enormously huge cost BTW}.
The problem is, the floodgates are open in many other areas.
