I'll bet you guys didn't know this.

CCI primers are WAY better than Winchester primers. This according to a LGS employee when asked by my wife why the CCI primers were $66.00 per thousand while the Winchester primers were $33.00 per thousand. And you guys thought you knew everything.

Could be worse. no LGS at all. There's a local Big5 sporting goods with some long guns, not a real gun store IMO. Asking a clerk in any store seems fruitless now-a-days.

I was in this gun shop not long ago and the CCI primers were marked around $33.00. Obviously someone mismarked them. The thing that bothers me is that the employee was either ignorant or thought he could put one over on my wife. My wife has no knowledge of reloading and if I had told her to buy the CCI's, she would have, and at a ridiculous price. Fortunately I wanted the Winchester.

For many years me and many others used CCI exclusively because -- well just because.

Around here, they were most common, and as folks are apt to do, highly recommended because that was what they used; therefore it must be best.

During the primer shortage, this notion was pretty much debunked, and now it seems that folks will use anything they can get their hands on. If CCI was twice as spendy, and others were available, I'd never use CCI again. jd

I know that CCI's tend to be a little more expensive, but twice as much?!

I just bought 5000 Winchester WSP's, and 2000 CCI 350's from Midway. Maybe I should have looked at the prices :p

I switched to Russian Primers

I switched to Russian Primers for rifle:
TULAMMO SMALL RIFLE MAG PRIMERS (KVB556M) (1000) Yes $24.50
I used to use CCI#41. Zero complaints with the Tula primers.
And S&B for pistol:
SELLIER & BELLOT LARGE PISTOL PRIMERS (1000) Yes $22.00
Haven't tried the S&B yet. Still using up the cheapo WW.

$66! Wow, gouging? That's twice what they're charging around here for CCI. I'd just buy the Winchester or better yet, avoid that place and let him know why.

Since you state that your wife has no knowledge of reloading, I suspect WVM is right. The CCI primers in question were probably BR primers, which someone might reasonably say are WAY better than standard Winchester primers, without explaining why to a non-reloader. But, I could be wrong. I was once before. ;)

While I use CCI almost exclusively ... I've found the the other primers work just as well. Some have softer cups, others are a bit hotter... But all go bang and never found a primer that I would 'stay away from' (other than I won't buy a foreign brand just because).

I'll bet you guys didn't know this.

AL45, you win. I am the fan of 'the more powerful', I want the most powerful primers available. That leaves me with Federal primers. I do not buy into the more powerful thing but if Federal primers were more powerful I could test and compare, that is better than talking about it.

Then there is R. Lee's book on modern reloading, I have the very rare book, I know, it is not fair. There is a remote chance I have the same book issued to other reloaders, there is a chance I have the only book that has been read.

Ouch. I was grumpy when the LGS raised the price of Winchester primers from $35 to $40 per thousand. Actually, I still am grumpy about it, but I am about to buy another box because it beats paying hazmat fees.

Not defending the clerk, but someone selling something is supposed to be an expert on that product, if by position only (if he's selling the stuff he's gotta know all about it, right? :p). Go to a auto parts store and every clerk is a long time mechanic, knowledgeable in all aspects of automotive engineering (I'm hoping you guys understand sarcasm!). Perhaps he was confronted with a question he had no answer for and just winged it. How would you as a customer, not 100% familiar with a specific product react if a clerk replied with "I dunno"? So, the clerk has to become an expert to avoid embarrassment, and an upset customer...

Not all misinformation is an attempt to cheat someone...
