IL Registration?

Someone told me today that I had to register part of my ar or the whole gun or something. I had never heard anything about this before and just assumed that they had been told something incorrect. Is this just some misinformation, or is it some law that I never heard about? Does anyone from IL know anything about this? I thought that IL didn't have any registration laws except in Chicago.

No, Illinois has no registration of firearms, although you need a FOID card, which amounts to registration of you as a gun owner.

Your local municipality may be a different story. You mentioned Chicago so I assume you don't live there.

Handguns owned in Chicago had to be registered by some date back in the 70s with no new registrations allowed after that date. Idea being to freeze the number of handguns in Chicago and, of course, have a list. Most criminals seem not to follow this law.

I'm in Central IL. I didn't think that there was anything, but I figured better safe than sorry. I usually try to have a pretty solid handle on the laws so I don't get myself into trouble, but there are so many new laws all the time, and I figured that maybe I missed one. The FOID definitely sucks, but it's the waiting periods that really get me.

The only way to buy a gun without the waiting period in Illinois is to get a Federal Firearms license. The standard one is halfway impossible to get and keep without a storefront (though people still do) but a Curio and Relics FFL (Cruffle) is $30 and a background check. This will let you purchase and sell guns like an FFL as long as they're Curio or Relics (at least 50 years old) and you're trading them around only for your private collection (it's not a license to run a business buying and selling C&R's.)
