"IF" you had to take a lever gun into combat

Which model and what caliber would you take?
I realize it's a strange question but.......I guess I just like to ask strange questions!

god bless:D :D :D

I love the Win '92's and the Marlin '95's, but I must admit that for combat I'd want a Winchester '95. The Ruskies used them for combat long after we had copied the Krauts with our Springfields. I'd want a better cartridge than the old .30-40 Krag, though. A .30'06 would be just right.

I would think hard on taking a Browning BLR in 308 or 30-06. Side ejection, front locking bolt, detachable magazines and a 45 degree stroke on the lever. Seems faster and probably easier to cycle while prone.

BLR in .762 NATO first choice.
Win Model 95 rechambered for 7.62 and modified for detachable mag second choice.

If you can live with the 200 yard limitation of a roundnose, the tube is till the way to go. Loading port is about 2 inches from the trigger, and you can load while ready for business. You never drop a tube in the mud or loose it. A conventional Marlin or Win in a 30-30 or 307 would be my first choice.

The Russian 1895s were chambered for the 7.62x54R, which has respectable 308+ numbers with the heavier bullets. Loading through the top with the action open would not be my first choice for combat.

A 30-30 Winchester Model 94 cause that's the one I currently own. If I had to take one into combat I figure that would be because all my other semis were gone or I couldn't get to them. The winchester would do just fine until I could get back to them and/or I captured something better.

Remember, those Russian M1895s had stripper clip guides, too. They were a pretty slick item. I believe collectors think that as well, so getting one's hands on one would be quite a coup.

Well, I would not be real happy with a lever action in combat, I presume you mean military combat or some form of serious civil disturbance with many actors that are all violent.

That being said, I guess a Marlin in .357 magnum.

Get one of those belt buckle 6 shot plastic .38.357 ammo holders and empoxie it to the left side of the reciever to give me a 'side-saddle' like tac-star 12 guage mounts.

Add to it, a wood handguard that wraps around the stock (like the old military versions of the Winchester 95) so as not to burn my hands after firing rapid fire.

Add an Ashly reap peep and either a very short scope with long eye releaf or some form of Aimpoint.

Then, a belt with at least 30 loops for .357 mag ammo and a good lightweight .357 revolver (say a 3 inch Ruger GP-100, magna-ported).

And hope for the best.

Savage 99 in .250-3000 sav.
Col. Charles Askins used his to good effect in some gun battles.
BTW, I have a custom AK that I would trade for one:)

Marlin in .44Mag

For under 200yds, very effective. The tube holds 10 and you cab 'top-off' the magazine as you expend ammo. The exposed hammer is a plus when having to move around with a round in the chamber. I have a Williams adjustable peep on mine and am considering a Ghost ring sight.

Ditto on ziplock's comments. My 1894P is light years ahead of a 30/30 in terms of speed in cycling the action. I can shoot it as fast as a semi for aimed fire. Inside of 100 yards, a .44 mag is hard hitting. I can load as I go. No magazines to lose or manage. The big downside is shooting it dry. Transition to handgun time.

A man armed with a lever action rifle that knows how to use it is a powerful force.

I'd take my Marlin 336. Its rock solid reliable, lightweight and packs quite a punch within 175 yards. Sometime in the future its going to be "scoutified" w/ the Ashley GR and mount topped with the Leupold. I'd put a German #1 reticle in the scope.

I agree with the Browning BLR, in 30.06. Fast handling up close, capable of 250 + yard shots (to keep the bad guys at a distance).

If I could find one, my second choice would be a Savage 99 in .308.

I've sampled both of these rifles and they are both accurate enough to be a good sniper rifle in case some bozo sticks his head up where he shouldn't. (at least the rifles I shot were that accurate).

The finest rifle caliber lever gun for any purpose is...

the Savage 99. In .300 Savage, it has just a little less horsepower than .308 Winchester. I'd like a moderate scope on it, possibly forward mounted ala "scout".

For close range work, one of the M92s or Marlin 1894 in 357 Magnum or larger.

marlin 336 cs 35 rem cut down to 16", scout scope, Cartrige holder on stock, plastic stock, Parkarized, ashley peep, q.d. sling. lots of ammo.
