No, it's not a "what gun would you choose?" thread...

I will likely transfer next year, so it's time to start looking at the possibility that I might have to go to a non-RKBA-friendly state...

So, worst case scenario (if I don't get to transfer back to Alaska), which of these states would be the best for an avid shooter and outdoorsman?

I'm only listing the states commonly referred to as non-RKBA-friendly. The states I could be assigned to that are RKBA-friendly are already on my possibilities list.

Ugh. I'd just keep your fingers crossed for AK or at least NOT NY or NJ. That's a long list of states with questionable dedication to the 2A you have there.

Unfortunately, it's also a list of states with a lot of positions within my specialty...

The states we're wanting are as follows (in order of preference)...
AK
MO
GA
FL
AL
LA
TX
TN
WA
OR
ME
NH
SC
NC
VA
WI
MN
MI

Hopefully I won't have to go any deeper than #3 on that list, but you never know what the transfer season is going to bring...

Ohio

I would have to vote for Ohio. Based strictly on what I have read Ohio seems to be the most gun-friendly state listed. I am curious as to why 50% say Mass. It seems to me to be not gun-friendly. Maybe I am wrong.

Oh, I see now. Only 2 people had voted. Still may be wrong.

Don't blame you for not wanting to come to Texas. Man, it is hot here these days!

Throw in IL and you have the top ten. OH is probably your best bet out of all of those.

Yeah, thankfully, there are no jobs for my rating in IL...

The only bad part about OH is that the only jobs for me there are in Cleveland... In the federal building... Which means no CCW or knife carry...

I live in Kentucky right across the river from Ohio. While Ohio isn't as gun friendly as Kentucky, they are actually getting better. Ohio is now a shall issue state and they are cleaning up their CCW laws. For example, the Buckeye Tuck is now a thing of the past.

Out of all states you listed, I think Ohio is one of the best.

Maybe someone more familiar with the local terrain can answer: if you got Cleveland, would it be feasible to live just across the Pennsylvania line and commute?

If you end up in Georgia send me a PM and we'll see if we can get together. I hate to admit his but I'd probably have to pick California of your options. Never been there, but had some family there for a while. It has some wierd laws, and some wierd people, but apparenty it is possible to get away from the wierd folks. You may be limited to which guns you can own, but I see more hunting opportunities there than in the other states which would mean something to me.

I won't mislead you -- I wouldn't choose to move to any of those places and didn't vote. You're screwed.

Yup. Me neither.

I'd be turning down orders and looking at getting ETS papers.

Not sure why Ohio is on the non-RKBA-friendly list. It is a 'shall issue' state, after all.

Sure, its laws aren't as RKBA-friendly as Pennsylvania's, but hey, neither are Texas's. ;)

It's not so much Ohio as a whole as it is the city I would be stationed in. Cleveland is the only place I could go in OH, and my actual shop/office would be in the federal building downtown... I've been there. The DHS cops manning the security line freak out if you bring a pocketknife, in uniform...

The larger a city is, by-and-large, the less RKBA-friendly it is... Cleveland is a very big city...

For anyone who was curious...

I received my notification today, I'm headed back to AK!!!!

Now on to building my perfect bear defense gun... (Again) :D
