...in our lifetime, it is that WE CAN SURVIVE ANYTHING!
As we await the outcome, relieve some tension by recalling the following observations, not directly on democracy, but relevant:
"Idiot, n. A member of a large and powerful tribe whose influence in human affairs has always been dominant and controlling." -- Ambrose Bierce
"Only two things are infinite-the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not so sure about the universe." -Albert Einstein
And before it gets too late in the day, I want to record my odd duck, totally contrarian prediction (which will be promptly forgotten if I'm wrong).
Gore will will the popular vote and Bush will win the electoral college. That's right, exactly the opposite of the conventional off-beat scenarios being kicked around.
How? Gore's appeals to his base get out his vote, and Nader's voters change their mind in the election box. But a surge in California by Bush makes it all irrelevant. The 54 votes there put him way over the top.
ZOGBY's state by state totals this morning put CA as a tie, a steady day to day gain by Bush there, which parallels a steady day to day national gain by Gore.
PS ZOBGY was the ONLY pollster to call the 96 election accurately 49-41 for Clinton v. Dole.
