If an outright gun ban occured...which handgun would you choose to buy beforehand?

Looking at the media storm after the tragic events in Arizona has me a little concerned. You see, I lived in Scotland as a young boy in the mid 1990's after the Dunblane Massacre. Even then, I loved my daisy air rifle, and my KWC air soft pistols! I couldn't wait to grow up and own the real thing some day. I don't think anyone was suspecting the ball to roll so far down the hill--an outright ban on all handguns.

I think it is an interesting thought because it strips down a gun to some really basic points. What will last the longest without needing factory work? What do you trust to defend your homes and families? What can you acquire enough spare parts for to keep running?

I'm kind of split between a good revolver, a large bore handgun like the 1911 that has one hundred years of spare parts out there, or maybe something high capacity like the Beretta 92, which also has a lot of spare critical parts available for purchase. Of course, there is the poly group of thought. Something like a Glock 17 would probably be a safe bet.

Anyway, I am curious to see what people would buy RIGHT NOW, if they knew handguns would be gone...

So two votes for revolvers. A safe bet actually the more I think about it...

No mag springs to set or wear out!

And to the first poster, the capacity issue is null if you have a brace of model 10s!

I haven't owned a Freedom Arms, but from what I've heard, they are built to last. And .45 colt is pretty easy to load for even with a simple set up...

I would buy (2) P-229 E2, P-226 TAC Ops(both 9MM) along with lots of spare parts, lube, mags and the like. I could be happy with 4 handguns total in my collection. The beauty is all 4 would be SIGS that share some common parts.

If I still had some more cash, I would probably buy a Glock 17 or 19 in 9MM, along with this purple "pocket gun" I glanced at last time I was at my LGS for my wife too be.

If I could have only 1 it would be the P-229 E2 with as much ammo as I could carry.

1) Glock: there are so many out there and you can mix and match parts if need be

2) 1911: for same reason as the Glock

3) .357 Revolver: not very many parts to wear out

It may also be a good time to get into reloading.
I will probably think of more but these 3 are my initial "knee jerk" reaction.

Oh, my previous post was about what I would buy because all my guns were lost in a horrific boating accident.

Smith and Wesson 686 or Ruger GP-100 in .357 magnum. Really can't go wrong. Both have versatility in calibers. The Smith is tuned and the Ruger is built like a tank. I'd keep whatever it was in a 4" barrel for "doin it all".

Sig P226 (combat TB) in 9mm, a .45 of some sort(1911 or P220), and Beretta M9 in 9mm.

*Edit* Not only would you have to worry about a hellish ammo shortage, but maybe even, heaven forbid, a riot.

If I get to keep what I own, I'm fine. Of those, my SIG P226 9mm has the features I consider most valuable: reliablity, accuracy, capacity, availability and cost of ammunition, and, you know...SIG :D

I will stick to the idea of only one gun

I would go with the nicest 357 I could find. I have looked at the LCR and that makes some sense in regard to concealibility. If handguns were going to be illeagle to buy bot still ok to carry then maybe something a little bigger. If things got really bad somethign concealable would serve you well.

The second reason for that choice is that 38 and 357 could be fed to the gun therefore more chance of available ammo.

This is the very reason that having a collection of things now is worth doing. They can't take from you what you already own.

They can't take from you what you already own.

Wanna bet? Ask folks in the UK, Australia, or New Zealand if they can't take something you own, they declared illegal and asked you to turn in.

Probably a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag 4 1/2". Sad thing about the Arizona situation besides those murdered, is the thought that the shooter may have been a sleeper. With all things going on with the Powers That Be in their desire to destroy the Constitution I wouldn't put it past them to set up some emotional freak to do that dasturdly deed just to get the gun ban wagon really rolling.
