If 6.8 spc was cheap, would people end their relationships with 5.56 ?

Other than cost, I'm not sure why the 5.56 has any advantage.

This question is the handgun equivalent of asking: If 10mm was cheap, would people end their relationship with 45s?

(actually, I posting this question comment to get input from you... I'm not confident with the statements above)

I would say not.

5.56 has lighter recoil than 6.8 same thing is true with .45 compared to 10mm.

Acurate shot placement will always trump caliber.

I'd buy a 6.8 over the 556/223 every time anyway.... 10mm over 45acp too. Reloading makes cost differences mostly disappear. I like 7mm-08 over 6.8 for my purposes though... but no doubt the 6.8 would be entirely adequate.

I don't think the .223/5.56 will ever go the way of the dodo bird. Once a ctg is accepted by a major military it pretty much enjoys a very long and fruitful life. It fills a nice niche between the .22 Hornet and .22-250 that folks appreciate for dispatching varmints- among other attributes. For personal use- I just don't see the 6.8 shining for me as well on p-dog towns. For anything bigger than a yote though- oh heck yeah, my 6.8 gets much more respect there.

But all in all, if the price were the same, and even if a military would adopt the 6.8- I could see some folks going to it, just not in droves. It all comes down to what already fill it's prefered needs. Look at the .22 Hornet- with the ctg's that have come along since it's birth, it almost baffles me why it hasn't died a respectful but peaceful death... becasue folks see it's usefulness for the niche it fills.

I see it as a reliability, capacity, weight, and cost question. So im going with 556. The 223/5.56 round with the right bullet selection is more then enough for home defence. Better then a 10mm also:eek:

In a heart beat. But the cost of the upper is not cheap either. If both were as cheap as 5.56, then the 5.56 would be a foot note in history already.

I have both and use both. I reload so cost is a small matter. I prefer the 5.65 for most needs. Both will survive.

I wouldn't be in any hurry to switch to 6.8. Maybe if it was mil issue for a few years, I'd get into it. As it is, the .223 is adequate for varmints and plinking. I have plenty of harder hitting rifles to use when more than the 223 is needed. Compared to a .308 or 30/06 the 6.8 isn't all that much better than a 223 anyway.

If you like the 6.8 then you ought to love the 7.62x39. Not a nickel's difference in'm.

Haha, that's so funny. A while back I was looking into a semi-automatic rifle for use as a hog gun. I was so surprised at how similiar the two cartridges where. It made me laugh that the "new" cartridge was no different than the old 7.62x39 that the rest of the world has been using for years and years.

I'd stick with the .223 over the 6.8, though. I really like the cartridge because its fun to shoot.
