If .22LR Was All You Had - Which Ammo Would You Choose

The heading says it all really. If a .22LR handgun, either revolver or auto, was the only weapon you had to hand for PD purposes, which type of .22 ammo would you choose as you carry type and why ?

You ask revolver or semi-auto. Either you have both or the issue of what .22LR to buy has not been decided. If the latter, then step up to .22mag or the Kel-tec P32.

This is assumed to be a one-time self-defense and the cops/prosecutor will keep your gun forever (in other words - a throw-away). Go revolver, longest barrel you can conceal/carry (every inch costs a LOT of fps with 22LR - see other threads on NAA revolvers or see their website).

Now if we could only pull the bullets on the Aguila Sniper Subsonics and fill the cases with a hotter powder... The SSS develop only 120 ft lbs versus CCI's stingers at 191 ft lbs and Aguila's Super Max HV at 204. Thus there seems to be some headroom for load development. I think Aguila went for too much lead in a .22short case and sacrificed powder. Too bad there is not a compromise at 50 grains and more powder.

1. CCI Stingers (very good load for a .22 LR)
2. Quick Shok (very effective in creating a devastating shallow wound, but has poor penetration due to bullet splitting into three parts). Still, Quick Shok is a fairly decent .22 LR round.

CCI Stinger. It's not just very hot for
.22, but also 100% reliable. I wasted may be 500-600 of them with no a single problem of any kind, except for my wallet. Stingers also seem to be sealed real well against moisture.

I would carry Remington Vipers if they still make them. The reasoning is that a .22 has very little stopping power to begin with so you need very precise shot placement and penetration to a vital area. A flatpoint, like the Viper, will often penetrate in more of a straight line than a roundnose. I'd aim for the nose.

Going to a hypervelocity, light, fragmenting .22 is asking for a surface wound imho.

Minimags: they are hot and do not have a hollow point. Minmag +V are also good (SWC profile).

These days I mostly use Remington Golden bullets which come in a 550 round bulk pack for $9 at Walmart. They are clean and reliable and quite fast.

Interesting topic.

I've used Stingers, mini-mags and Aguila hyper-velocity. Don't like the inconsistency of the Aquila. Minimag probably marginally better than the Stinger, but more expensive as I recall. Strong argument to be made for the super accurate CCI Green Tag.

Stingers overall.

Ok, y'all might laugh, but it is a classic round that has not failed me once. Now, all of my 22's are magazine fed aside from the derringer so I would want to stick with the round nose and a nice heavy, high velocity round. I also want a standard length casing that won't stick on ejection. Therefore, my choice is Remington Thunderbolt 40 grain LRN.

It's a tossup between the Yellowjackets, Vipers, or MiniMag +Vs. In that order as I've found that the MiniMag +Vs are almost impossible to get anymore. Having said all that I find myself going through *tremdous* amounts of the HP Golden Bullets these days and only dig out the others when I have a *really* pesky `varmint' who seems to have `learned' my `range' with the Golden Bullets. {GRIN!} (*If* it's a *totally* obnoxious `varmint' then I `introduce' it to either `Mr. .223' or Mr. .308' outa one of my A-Bolt "Varminters". {CHORTLE!})

Depends on barrel length.

In something like a Beretta 21A, I'd say CCI Stinger.

In longer barrel handgun or rifle I'd go with Winchester 40gr Power Point.

When speaking recently with the head of service at Beretta USA, Jay Conners, I was told that Stingers are not recommended for use in my Beretta Bobcat 21A, however minimags were approved.
