IDPA holster for 4" 1924 Colt Police Positive .38 Special

I have a mind to shoot my Grandpa's service revolver in IDPA. Not regularly, just the best account I can muster, and say I did it. Don't know much about revolvers; less about holsters for them. Any recommendations? (I'm a lefty, and I've got his right handed duty holster . . .)

What about a speedloader or some kind of a moon clip? Do you only use speed loaders with revolver cartridges, like .38 Special, and moon clips with semi auto cartridges, like .45 ACP? Or is it some other deal? Like I said, I'm real ignorant in these matters.

And whatever the deal is, is the solution in my case universal? Do I use any available feeding device for this gun? Or will contemporary devices not work (can't really imagine that, but)?

Anything else you think I might need to know, I'd love to hear it.

I've got revolver shooters in my club that I'm going to talk to, but I thought I'd ask you guys first.

A Safariland 5181 for the Colt Detective Special should work. It is an open bottom paddle holster. (A belt loop attachment is available as well.) For the right-hand model, the product code is 5181-01-61. Hopefully, this will put you in the ballpark for the left-hand model.

For speedloaders, models for the Detective Special will also fit. (S&W K-Frame loaders can interchange in certain cases.)

Speaking of Colt Police Positive .38 sp. Can anyone tell me if I have the small frame (1 1/2" at the bottom of the butt) and does anyone make after market grips or a t-grip for this classic. I'd like to reblue it if I could find grips that fit my hand better than the old plastic ones. Thanks for any input. Kevin

I would just retire that gun and get someting made for heavy use. They do not take a licking and keep ticking, neat old guns but they do go out of time very easy. Colt punched them out to compete in price with the smith .38 top brakes which also dont take to a lot of rounds. I steped on one once and bent the frame.

You are right about the speedloaders being for revolver cartridges (rimmed) and moon clips are for semi-auto (rimless) cartridges. Bianchi also makes a speed strip for 38/357 thats handy but I don't think it would be usefull for IDPA. Check out the HKS brand, they are fairly cheap, last forever, and are just about foolproof. Last word of advise is forget that the gun can fire single-action.
