Price of ammo makes it more affordable to shoot a 9 mm in the ESP division over the 45 acp in CDP. On the other hand now you are up against the glock, xd, m&p crowd in ESP

I'm not a 1911 shooter, but if I were to pick an IDPA gun, I'd like it to be able to cross over to USPSA as well. That effectively eliminates the 9mm 1911 then. For IDPA ESP, I'd either go with a striker-fired 9mm (Glock, M&P or XD) so I could shoot USPSA Production, or a double-stack 1911 in .40S&W (e.g. STI Eagle) so I could shoot USPSA Limited.

A .45acp 1911 can be shot in IDPA CDP as well as USPSA Single Stack, so between a 9mm and .45ACP 1911, I'd opt for the latter. A 9mm 1911 is cool, but it simply has too little general utility for my taste. YMMV.

The line count from the 2012 IDPA Nationals shows 1911s at 48 .45s and 40 9mms. Also 5 .40s.

If you handload, the ammo cost is not as much of a factor.

Me?
I am shooting mostly 9mm in ESP, also some .45 Minor ESP because I can't handle the recoil as well as I used to but want to keep the guns in use.

At present I shoot SSP with a Glock 19 and have shot maybe a dozen matches. I would like to try my hand with my new Range Officer in .45 though. Thanks everyone.
