i need help identifying this rifle. I think its an Italian carcano. What model, year and caliber I'm not sure of. I will attach some photos, and all the markings I can find.
On the underside of the rear sight itself 75 with a T under that. A 289, a 75 with 89 stamped over it, under that is a 2 stamped out by a T.
On the octagon of the barrel is AC, 17, a crown w/re under it followed by TERNI, ON3243, then a circled SG
The bolt has OT 1546
On the barrel under where the rear site goes it has 5 5, 6 under that, T1 under that. Any help??? I mainly want to know what caliber it is, I would like to fire the gun, just not sure what to buy, and they are all expensive rounds. I would also like to know which model and year out of curiosity. Thanks to anyone that helps me.DSC02111.jpg

The rest of my pics. There are a few more numbers here and there. If i need anymore numbers for a good identification please let me know. THANKS AGAIN

The rear sight is distinctive of a Model 91/24. The chambering will be 6.5X52mm Mannlicher-Carcano, aka 6.5mm Carcano. Ammo is made by Norma, Hornady, and Prvi Partizan.

let me know how it shoots there are 2 carcanos within 25 miles of me and the are both 6.5's. The ammo runs about $40 a box, stay away from the swedish 6.5 ammo though.

little more help

Just a few more questions. What numbers tell that this is a 6.5 x 52?? what do any of the numbers mean? I want to be very sure of the caliber. i guess I would just like a little verification. what is the differance in a 6.5 x 55?

Its the metric id used by europeans, 6.5 is the caliber. 52 will be the lenght of the case in MM. The Sweed 6.5X55 is or its case is 55 milmeters long.

The diameter of the case (not the bullet) may also be different.

like the 7.62X39 (ak round) vs. the 7.62X51 (Nato Round or our 308 winchester)

I'm familiar with caliber sizes. What I want to know is, what is it about the numbers on this weapon that confirm what caliber it shoots.

It has nothing to do with the numbers, so to speak. The rifle is an Italian Mannlicher-Carcano Model 91/24 rifle (a variant of the Model 1891 rifle, there were several), as identified by the rear sight. These were only made in 6.5X52mm, the Italian service cartridge at the time. Since there was only one, it makes it pretty easy to determine what cartridge the rifle was originally chambered for.

A few years later, a similar service rifle was introduced in the slightly larger 7.35X52mm (not more powerful, just a larger bullet diameter) due to the Italian army's experiences in Abissinia (now Ethiopia) during Mussolini's expedition to conquer that area. These are marked 7,35mm on the rear sight.
